FrontStreet Coffee Indonesia Blue Eye Mandheling Introduction
In Indonesia, it's rare to find micro-batch Mandheling with almost zero defects. The Lintong Toba Lake Nihuta region not only has high altitude but also boasts the best terroir conditions around Lake Toba. The coffee grown here is clean, with pronounced sweetness and fruit aromas. Combined with multiple hand-selected micro-batches (TP), the aftertaste of this batch of FrontStreet Coffee Indonesia Blue Eye Mandheling remains clean even as it cools.
The best coffee from Sumatra comes from two places: the Aceh province in northern Sumatra near Lake Tawar, and the mountainous areas surrounding Lake Toba in the south. Due to many small tenant producers and their unique semi-washed processing methods and lack of iron in the soil, coffee beans from this region display a distinctive blue coloration in their fresh green bean stage.
Sumatra Island is Indonesia's second-largest island and the world's sixth-largest, covering an area of 470,000 square kilometers—thirteen times the size of Taiwan. It's divided into eight provinces, but only two provinces grow coffee extensively: Aceh and North Sumatra. The most representative coffee-producing regions in these provinces are the Gayo Mountain range surrounding Lake Tawar in Aceh, where coffee is cultivated by the indigenous Gayo people, featuring a distinctive culture centered around female farming and harvesting. Coffee in North Sumatra is grown around Lake Toba, an enormous lake that is the world's largest volcanic crater lake. The famous producing region is Lintong, located south of Lake Toba.
Under this semi-wet semi-dry processing method, coffee farmers use machines to remove the skin and pulp of red cherries, leaving much mucilage still attached to the coffee beans. The beans are then stored in fermentation tanks and stirred for about a day (24 hours). When fermentation is complete, the attached mucilage can be easily washed away with water. The beans are then sun-dried until they reach approximately 30-35% moisture content, after which the outer husk is removed, making them ready for market sale. Removing the coffee bean husk in this semi-wet semi-dry state reveals a unique deep blue color in the beans. This processing method reduces acidity and increases the body of the coffee, creating this distinctive Indonesian-style coffee.
