FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Panama Finca La Esmeralda Red Label

Geisha is a rare variety of coffee and the undisputed king of today's specialty coffee scene. It has repeatedly won championships in green bean competitions across various countries and has been frequently chosen by barista competition participants who achieve outstanding results.

The rise to fame of Geisha is directly related to Panama's Finca La Esmeralda. It was precisely La Esmeralda that brought Geisha to the SCAA 2005 International Green Bean Competition, where it won first place and became renowned worldwide.

Each year, Finca La Esmeralda carefully selects Geisha coffee from its 12 different plots for global online auctions. Because the logo of the auction batches is red, they are commonly known as "Red Label Geisha." Their public auction mechanism has repeatedly set world records for the most expensive coffee beans.

At FrontStreet Coffee, we consistently believe that for brands or IPs in the consumer goods category, product support is of course the most important factor. A single estate may produce large quantities, and perhaps occasionally have championship-level products, which only demonstrates its upper limit. However, what we need to examine more is its lower limit—that is what determines whether an estate is truly top-tier.

The highest-grade coffee beans from La Esmeralda are of course their auction Geisha varieties. Currently, there are two auctions that feature La Esmeralda's auction batches: one is the Esmeralda Special Auction, where we successfully bid on Es-W-1 and Es-N-1 this year; the other is the Best of Panama Auction (BOP Auction), where we successfully bid on BOP-GN-4 from La Esmeralda. On their packaging bags, we have applied the golden circles of La Esmeralda's auction batches!

Before 2018, La Esmeralda Red Label was what remained after the auction batches. However, it has since been completely separated by plot. Its designation is Geisha grown at altitudes of 1600-1800 meters above sea level, available in three processing methods: washed, natural, and special processing. This year, we purchased four Red Label varieties: Mario Natural, Fundador Natural, Mario Washed, and Leon SP.

Knowledge Expansion

The Geisha variety was discovered in the Geisha forest of Ethiopia in 1931 and later sent to the Coffee Research Institute in Kenya. Afterward, it was introduced to Uganda, Tanzania, and Costa Rica, where it showed mediocre performance. It wasn't until it was transplanted to Panama in the 1960s that it made a spectacular breakthrough after nearly half a century of cultivation.
