FrontStreet Coffee - Panama La Esmeralda Red Label Introduction
BOP (Best Of Panama) is one of the most authoritative coffee cupping competitions in the coffee world (other similar competitions include COE, TOH, etc.). All coffee varieties grown in Panama can participate in BOP, where they are evaluated by authoritative international judges through层层考核, scored, and finally auctioned.
La Esmeralda Specialty from Panama is a rare award-winning estate auction bean that has set new records three times in online auctions. In June 2004, it reached $21 per pound; in May 2006, $50.25 per pound; in May 2007, $130 per pound; and in May 2010, it reached an impressive $170 per pound.
After nearly a century of obscurity and various hardships, Geisha was finally brought to fame by La Esmeralda Estate, making a spectacular impact on the world. Once released to the market, it was quickly snapped up by enthusiastic buyers. Due to the variety's unique flavor profile and consecutive BOP championship wins, Panama was forced to reform the competition, dividing entries into "Geisha Category" and "Non-Geisha Category" – truly a coffee variety that could "divide a nation."
La Esmeralda Estate now has four major plots: Jaramillo, Cañas Verdes, Palmira, and El Velo. Based on years of experiments, it was discovered that Geisha grown at altitudes above 1400 meters can best exhibit its characteristic flavors. Therefore, La Esmeralda's Geisha is classified into Red Label, Green Label, and Blue Label based on cultivation altitude.
La Esmeralda Red Label – Auction batches, considered among the world's finest Geisha coffees, available only through annual global auctions. Grown at altitudes of 1600-1800 meters with cupping scores above 90 points. Primarily produced in Jaramillo and Cañas Verdes estates, these Geisha beans are harvested from the highest points of the Boquete region, possessing special, bright floral aromas and citrus notes.

Flavor Profile: Oolong tea fragrance, peach aroma, honey sweetness – refreshing and comfortable, bright yet balanced. The aroma has exceptional complexity, with the entire fragrance wrapped in caramel sweetness. Upon entry, distinct fruit acidity is felt on the tongue, becoming gentle and rounded in the mouth. The fruity sweetness and aftertaste are intense, like drinking fresh fruit tea – pure and refreshing. The acidity becomes more delicate as the temperature decreases. The flavor characteristics are remarkably persistent, bringing great satisfaction!
Review: The aroma released during grinding is refreshing and invigorating – strong, rich fruit fragrance. Upon tasting, it's sweet, mellow, and silky smooth, with gentle fruit acidity and unique sweet aromas that are long-lasting and unforgettable. There's only one word to describe it: "stunning!"
Recommended for pour-over, French press, and other drip extraction methods to best showcase Geisha's extraordinary and charming flavor profile!
Knowledge Extension:
The Geisha variety was discovered in 1931 in the Geisha forest of Ethiopia, then sent to the Coffee Research Institute in Kenya. It was later introduced to Uganda, Tanzania, and Costa Rica, where it showed mediocre performance. It wasn't until the 1960s when it was transplanted to Panama that it finally made its spectacular impact after nearly half a century.
