FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee

Jamaican Coffee Grades and Growing Regions

Jamaica produces three main varieties of coffee: Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee, Jamaica High Mountain Supreme Coffee Beans, and Jamaica Prime Coffee Beans.

The Beautiful Blue Mountains of Jamaica

According to the standards of the Jamaica Coffee Industry Board (CIB), only coffee beans grown on the slopes to the peaks above 2,200 feet in the Blue Mountains can be called Jamaica Blue Mountain. These beans are then screened based on their size and shape, classified into three grades: NO.1, NO.2, NO.3, plus PB (Peaberry).

Coffee grown below 2,200 feet in the Blue Mountain region is called High Mountain Coffee, while coffee grown outside the Blue Mountain range is called Jamaica Prime Coffee.

Blue Mountain Coffee is mainly distributed across five mountain regions: John Crow, St. John's Peak, Mossman's Peak, High Peak, and Blue Mountain Peak.

Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee naturally possesses a clean, elegant taste with a persistent and unique charm, qualities rarely found in other coffees. For those who appreciate minimalist aesthetics, such as the Japanese, this coffee aligns perfectly with life elements like ikebana (flower arrangement), tea ceremony, and various aspects of Japanese style. It's only natural that Japanese people love Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee.

Dark Roasting Coffee

Dark Roasting Coffee refers to French or Italian roast coffee that has undergone the second crack during the roasting process. This coffee is designed to enjoy intense bitterness, the sweetness that emerges from bitterness, and a long-lasting aftertaste. Therefore, it's more suitable for strong extraction methods; light extraction makes it difficult to appreciate its rich texture.

To extract a richer aroma, typically a larger amount of coffee is used. Increasing the coffee quantity allows for more coffee components, thereby obtaining a richer coffee. Generally, for extracting 120mL, the author uses 20g of coffee. To extract more coffee components, you can also extend the extraction time (2.5-5 minutes). This allows the coffee to be in contact with water longer, dissolving more coffee components. Additionally, dark roast coffee has a rich aroma, and to enhance texture while suppressing bitterness, it's typically extracted at low temperatures for an extended period (80-82°C, 2.5-5 minutes).

Knowledge Extension

Abundant rainfall, local fertile volcanic soil, and suitable temperatures have contributed to Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee's mild, clean taste, as well as its rich and lasting charm.
