FrontStreet Coffee - Yirgacheffe Coffee Characteristics Introduction
Yirgacheffe town, with an altitude of 1700-2100 meters, is the core producing area of the Yirgacheffe region. To its north is the Wenago producing area, to the south is the Kochere region, to the east is the Bule region, and to the west are the Abaya and Gelena producing areas.
The coffee trees in Yirgacheffe were originally cultivated by European monks, later managed by farmers or cooperatives. Yirgacheffe is actually composed of surrounding coffee communities or cooperatives, including Idido, Harfusa, Hama, and Beloya near Misty Valley. The vast majority use the washed processing method, but there are also small amounts of specially processed natural methods.
Yirgacheffe grows in the Sidamo region of southwestern Ethiopia. The coffee beans are small to medium-sized, with raw beans showing a light yellow-green color. The beans are complete and beautiful, holding a representative position among East African specialty coffees.
Under the current ECX system, the Yirgacheffe area has been divided into four sub-regions: Yirgachefe, Wenago, Kochere, and Genlena Abay. The soil here is fertile, with an average altitude of over 1800 meters, making it a high-altitude region with significant temperature differences between day and night. The production methods of each region, combined with local unique native tree species coffee plantations, result in different flavor profiles for each batch of coffee beans, making them quite distinctive and unique.
Yirgacheffe is a high-quality washed Arabica bean with unique and bright fruity acidity. You can immediately feel the fresh and bright aroma upon first sip. This very distinctive Yirgacheffe, with its bold floral aroma and citrus acidity, richly layered flavors perfectly interpret the coffee's characteristics, creating an illusion similar to tea when drinking. Therefore, many people also say that Yirgacheffe doesn't taste like coffee, but rather like a soft and pleasant fruit tea. It can be both elegant and unrestrained, with a precise balance between simplicity and complexity, and has been beautifully described by the Japanese as the queen of coffees.
Originally, Yirgacheffe was famous for washed processing as the main method, but now natural-processed Yirgacheffe has gained enthusiastic market popularity due to its rich berry sweetness. Because of the significant increase in demand, the production of natural-processed Yirgacheffe has also increased substantially.
