FrontStreet Coffee - Sidamo Guji Hambella G1 Natural Mulu Washing Station Introduction

Ethiopia's administrative divisions are organized into four levels, from largest to smallest: Region, Zone, Woreda, and Kebele. Most coffee bean names follow this naming convention. For example, the "Horse Champion" coffee is located in the southeastern part of Yirgacheffe in the Sidamo producing area. Administratively, it belongs to Oromia Region → Guji Zone → Shakisso Woreda → Hambella.

In 2010, Guji Zone was established as an independent producing area by the ECX (Ethiopia Commodity Exchange) due to its superior geographical location and cup profile. Shakisso is the most attractive micro-producing area within the Guji region, located southeast of Yirgacheffe with an average altitude of over 1,800 meters.

Guji is also part of the Oromia region in southwestern Ethiopia, south of the capital Addis Ababa, bordering Sidamo to the north. Guji is a relatively new administrative division, established after the millennium when high-altitude areas separated from the Borena region. It was named after the Oromo indigenous people, who make up over 70% of the local population. Coffee cultivation is one of the important activities in this area.

The Hambella producing area is located between the towns of Gedeb and Hambella in the Guji block, only 75 kilometers from Yirgacheffe, yet it consistently produces excellent regional flavors that differ from Yirgacheffe. This area has an altitude of 1,900-2,200 meters, abundant annual rainfall of 1,200-1,500mm, and an average annual temperature of 18℃-25℃. The red-brown clay loam soil can fully retain nutrients, making the overall growing conditions quite complete.

Knowledge Extension:

The Guji producing area we mentioned is located in the central part of Oromia state, while Hambela is located in the western part of Guji. As for Yirgacheffe, its administrative division is quite special - part of it belongs to Oromia and part belongs to SNNP.
