1. Pour-Over Dripper
The pour-over method is a technique many people enjoy. It allows you to quietly appreciate the coffee liquid slowly dripping through in a relaxed manner. Coffee brewed using the pour-over method has a gentle and rich flavor profile.
The water-to-coffee ratio for pour-over typically ranges between 1:10 and 1:16. If you prefer milder coffee, you can choose a ratio of 1:14-1:16; for those who enjoy stronger flavors, a ratio of 1:10-1:11 is suitable; for a balanced taste that's neither too strong nor too weak, a ratio of 1:12-1:13 is recommended.
2. French Press
The French press is relatively simple to operate, but because it inevitably produces fine coffee grounds, many people don't prefer using it. When brewing coffee with a French press, a coffee-to-water ratio of 1:15-1:18 is generally acceptable, with water temperature between 88-94°C.
3. Moka Pot
Moka pots come in various sizes such as 3-cup, 9-cup, and 12-cup versions. You can choose the specification you need based on your requirements. Moka pots typically use a coffee-to-water ratio of 1:12-1:18 during brewing. In most cases, moka pots have a safety valve on the lower chamber, and its position indicates where the water level should reach. Additionally, simply fill the coffee basket evenly without pressing down.
4. Siphon Coffee Maker
Siphon coffee makers come in different sizes based on the number of servings. Typically, siphon brewing uses a coffee-to-water ratio of 1:12-1:20. If calculating based on a single serving of approximately 130ml of coffee, you might need to add 150ml of water and about 8-10g of coffee grounds. For different sizes, simply increase proportionally based on the single-serving amount.
5. AeroPress
The AeroPress allows for a wide range of water-to-coffee ratios. Different coffee beans, water temperatures, stirring times, and resting periods result in significant variations in AeroPress ratios, with some reaching 1:3 and others 1:17.
Therefore, we use the amount of coffee beans as the standard. Typically, the amount of coffee beans used ranges from 14g to 20g. Rarely would you use more than 25g of coffee, but there are championship cases, such as the 2016 Dublin brewing champion who used 30g of coffee, first brewing with 120g of water, then diluting with 80g. Therefore, the AeroPress offers greater possibilities as long as you dare to break through conventional thinking and experiment.
After brewing with an AeroPress, it needs to be diluted with hot water. A ratio of 1:13-1:16 is common, but this should also be determined based on different coffee beans.
Knowledge Extension: Common coffee defects such as excessive bitterness, excessive acidity, weakness, or excessive astringency are all caused by poor extraction control.
