FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to El Burro Estate in Boquete, Panama, the Origin of Geisha Coffee
Boquete is a town in the Chiriqui province, located near the border between Panama and Costa Rica, close to the famous Baru Volcano. With its beautiful scenery and fertile, rich soil, the climate and soil are exceptionally suitable for producing high-quality coffee. The microclimate found in the highlands of Boquete, Panama, is a unique and vital resource for the specialty coffee of the Boquete region. This is due to Panama's east-west environment, which allows cold air currents to converge above 6,500 feet through the central mountain range, creating multiple microclimates in the Boquete area. These conditions make the temperature and rainfall perfect for plant growth, so coffee trees planted here thrive exceptionally well.
El Burro Estate has a history of nearly 100 years. It was named "El Burro" (meaning donkey) because the original location of the estate was used for raising livestock, and after the owner began planting coffee, he named it after the donkeys. The coffee beans produced are of particularly high quality. El Burro Estate is situated in the Boquete region of Chiriqui province, Panama. The estate covers approximately 50 hectares, of which 20 hectares are planted with Geisha and Catuai, 10 hectares are reserved for future planting, while the remaining area is protected as part of the Baru Volcano National Forest Park. At an altitude of approximately 1,700-1,800 meters, the terrain in this area is steep, with numerous native tree species serving as shade trees, and is often shrouded in clouds and mist, effectively extending the coffee growth cycle. The soil is volcanic, high in potassium and phosphorus, and rich in organic matter.

Anaerobic Slow Drying (ASD) involves placing ripe coffee cherries in sealed, oxygen-free containers for 5 days of fermentation. After fermentation, they are placed on drying racks for 35 days of sun drying, followed by additional processing.

The renowned Elida Estate, with a history dating back to 1918, is a property of the Lamastus family. The estate's name, Elida, was named after the farm owner's wife at that time.
