Ethiopia Famous Representative Coffees: Mocha Harra, Yirgacheffe

Ethiopia faces Yemen across the Red Sea and is the world's first place where Arabica coffee trees were discovered. Coffee is grown almost everywhere within its territory. Among them, the eastern highlands of Harra produce the famous Harra Mocha, which has a special wine aroma and acidity, comparable to Yemen Mocha, and is considered a high-quality coffee.

The southern Sidamo and Djimmah regions are also well-known coffee-producing areas. The coffee produced there has a slightly different taste from that produced in Harra, with a fresher acidity and carries the fragrance of stone fruits. Within Sidamo, there is a small area called Yirgacheffe, where the coffee produced has very charming characteristics, with jasmine and lemon aromas, as well as a sweet taste like honey, making it globally renowned.

Why is Mocha Port in Yemen, but coffee produced in Ethiopia is also called Mocha? That's because previously Ethiopian coffee was also exported from Yemen's Mocha Port, so it was also named Mocha, and then further subdivided by different origin names, such as Mocha Harra, Mocha Djimmah, etc. Therefore, the same Mocha coffee could possibly come from Yemen or Ethiopia.

If all African coffee varieties were turned into a bouquet of flowers, Yirgacheffe should be one of the most beautiful flowers among them.

Ethiopia is the birthplace of Arabica coffee beans. Generally, pure Arabica coffee beans grow at high altitudes of 4,000 to 6,000 feet, while Yirgacheffe grows at 6,900 feet (2,300 meters, equivalent to the height of Alishan) in forested, sparsely populated areas with dense shade. It was once the exclusive coffee of the Ethiopian royal family. Today, coffee beans from the Yirgacheffe production region bring 67% of Ethiopia's foreign exchange.

After removing the outer skin, pulp, and mucilage, the coffee cherries are placed in fermentation tanks for 72 hours, belonging to washed coffee beans. Therefore, besides the floral aroma, it also slightly carries wine-like flavors.

Yirgacheffe has quite subtle floral aromas. Within its smooth and rounded mouthfeel, it hides the fragrance of flowers, fruits, and high mountain black tea, with some sweetness of orange peel, small seedless raisins, and cinnamon, and even the taste of dark chocolate. Paired with a clean and crisp acidity, it interweaves a gentle and pleasant flavor and aftertaste.

Knowledge Extension:

The world's first place where Arabica coffee tree species were discovered. Coffee is grown almost everywhere in Ethiopia, with thousands or even tens of thousands of coffee varieties.
