FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Brazil's Coffee Region | One of the World's Three Major Coffee Growing Areas
Brazil - Brasil
Central and South America is the world's largest coffee-producing region, and the output from this area significantly affects global green coffee prices. Among these, Brazil is the largest coffee-producing country in Central and South America and the world's leading coffee producer, supplying nearly 45% of the world's green coffee production. The length of the dry season in this country can even affect coffee prices worldwide.
Brazil's main producing regions include Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Bahia, and Espírito Santo. These four areas account for 90% of the country's exports. The commonly known Santos and Mogiana come from São Paulo. Cerrado and Sul de Minas in Minas Gerais are particularly noted for producing high-quality specialty Brazilian coffee beans due to their higher altitudes. Cerrado is located in the western part of Minas Gerais, a flat plateau with elevations ranging from 750m to 1200m.
Sul de Minas, with elevations of 700m-1200m, consists of hilly forestland and is Brazil's earliest coffee-producing area. Due to rising labor costs, most harvesting is now done mechanically, making it also the earliest region for coffee commercialization. We can see many large exporters established here. The Bahia region, located in northern Brazil, mainly produces washed Brazilian coffee, while the coastal Espírito Santo region is Brazil's main export area for the Robusta variety.
In Brazil, washed, honey, and natural processing methods are all used, but the most common is the natural processing method.
Brazil's grading system evaluates defect percentage, size, flavor, and cup quality, using its own independent grading system that is more complex than those of other countries. For example, "Brasil Santos NY 2 SC17/18 SS FC" indicates: NY2 is the defect percentage grade - larger numbers represent higher defect percentages, in the order of 2, 2/3, 3, 3/4, etc. NY indicates it's based on the New York grading standard. SC 17/18 indicates coffee bean size. SS FC (Strictly Soft and Fine Cup) represents flavor and cup quality, divided into two groups: the first includes Strictly Soft, Soft, Softish, Hard, Hardish, Rioy/Rioysh, Rio; the second is divided into Fine Cup and Good Cup.
Brazilian coffee is characterized by high sweetness, cleanliness, smoothness, and low acidity. It has wide applications and is universally loved by consumers.
