FrontStreet Coffee's Kenya Coffee Bean Recommendation: Introduction to Kenya AA Top EP GrainPro
Kenya's neighbor is Ethiopia. In Kenya, many growing regions strive to preserve the native forest ecosystem, protect natural gene banks, support the propagation of wild coffee varieties, and nurture diverse coffee trees. Kenyan coffee originated from Bourbon varieties selected and cultivated by French and British missionaries and researchers in Kenya in the early 20th century.
Over the past century, these varieties have adapted to Kenya's high-phosphorus soil, developing the unique acidic aromatics that distinguish Kenyan beans from their Bourbon counterparts in Central and South America. This Kenyan native variety was created in 1930 by Scott Laboratories, abbreviated as SL.
SL28 is a genetic variant with mixed heritage from French Mission, Mocha, and Yemeni Typica varieties. The original goal in developing SL28 was to mass-produce coffee beans that combined high quality with disease and pest resistance. Although SL28's yield later proved lower than expected, its copper-colored leaves and broad bean shape deliver wonderful sweetness, balance, and complex, varied flavors, with distinctive citrus and black plum characteristics.
This important variety introduces us to the unique Kenyan style: intense, rich fruit acidity, full body, and beautiful balance. Kenya AA is one of these varieties. Most Kenyan coffee is grown at altitudes above 1800-2100 meters, using the most rational cultivation and processing methods with strict quality control. This results in excellent aroma and acidity with outstanding balance, making it one of the main representative coffees from the African region.
