FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Yirgacheffe and Guji Regions

Ethiopia is widely recognized as the birthplace of coffee and today receives great attention in the specialty coffee industry. Coffee beans from Ethiopia have become essential single-origin offerings on menus of large, medium, and small coffee shops worldwide. At FrontStreet Coffee alone, we offer more than 10 different types of Yirgacheffe coffee. However, many friends who are new to specialty coffee may not yet be familiar with Yirgacheffe. Today, FrontStreet Coffee would like to share a simple introduction!

Yirgacheffe

Yirgacheffe is part of the Sidamo region, but due to its special coffee flavor characteristics, it has been separated into an independent micro-region. Most coffee produced here is processed by washing and can be described as a coffee with bright, clear acidity, possessing distinct floral notes, strong and complex flavors, rich floral aroma, moderate acidity, full-bodied taste, and a long aftertaste.

Coffee cultivation ranges from low to high altitude areas, and these characteristics may vary; for example, the Chichu and Michle cooperatives, located at altitudes between 1600-1800m, produce coffee with herbal plant aromas. Meanwhile, the Idido, Adadao, and Aramo cooperatives, situated at altitudes between 2000-2400m, exhibit distinct floral characteristics.

Guji

The Guji region was formerly part of the Sidamo region, but due to its superior geographical location and cupping quality, it was separated by ECX (Ethiopia Commodity Exchange) in 2010 to become an independent region. The soil in this region is fertile and nutrient-rich, with an average altitude above 1800 meters. The significant day-night temperature difference provides the local area with all the terroir conditions necessary to produce high-quality specialty coffee.

Coffee beans from the Guji region exhibit different flavor characteristics depending on the micro-region, such as Shakiso and Hambela, which are both micro-regions under Guji. Overall, Guji coffees mostly display rich tropical fruit flavors, with strong, full-bodied, and lively acidity.

Ethiopian washed coffee beans exude an elegant aroma, with refined floral and fruit notes and citrus flavors, clean as silk, but specific flavor characteristics have regional particularities. Natural process coffees often have richer, fuller fruit flavors. Compared to washed coffees, properly processed natural coffees maintain clean lemon aromas and floral notes while adding sweetness and body.

Knowledge Expansion

Because Ethiopia has significant differences in altitude and countless coffee varieties collectively known as Heirloom, Ethiopian coffee exhibits enormous flavor diversity.
