Pink Bourbon: A Rare and Precious Variety
Pink Bourbon, as the name suggests, is a pink-colored Bourbon variety coffee. It was first discovered in the town of Palestine in Huila Province, Colombia, and is currently mainly cultivated in the Huila region of Colombia. Pink Bourbon is a natural hybrid of Yellow Bourbon and Red Bourbon. Among these, Yellow Bourbon and Red Bourbon are dominant traits expressed through dominant genes, with relatively strong reproductive stability. However, the new variety Pink Bourbon, resulting from their hybridization, belongs to recessive traits expressed through recessive genes, and offspring produced through hybrid reproduction are highly prone to trait segregation.
Furthermore, coffee trees rely on pollen for sexual reproduction, making them extremely susceptible to pollination by other dominant trait varieties, which seriously affects the flowering and fruiting of the next season. This is the main reason why Yellow Bourbon and Red Bourbon are relatively common, while Pink Bourbon is rarely seen.
Concerns About Availability and Cultivation
Speaking of this, some friends might ask FrontStreet Coffee: with such limited quantities, won't it be gone after drinking it? Not at all. First, the natural hybridization process of Yellow Bourbon and Red Bourbon producing Pink Bourbon will not stop. Second, almost all Arabica coffee varieties self-pollinate, meaning that the recipient flower and pollen may come from the same plant, or even the same flower, which greatly enhances the stability of recessive trait expression. Therefore, when cultivating Pink Bourbon, a relatively independent growing environment is essential to avoid genetic contamination from other varieties.
Alternative Genetic Origins
There is another theory regarding the genetics of Pink Bourbon. Some studies suggest that Pink Bourbon is a natural hybrid of Colombia and Caturra varieties. Caturra is an excellent variant of Bourbon, while Colombia, as a coffee variety heavily promoted for cultivation in the country, has obvious advantages due to carrying some Robusta genes - it's high-yielding and resistant to leaf rust disease. However, its drawback is mediocre flavor performance and a lack of delicate acidity and sweetness.
Huila: Colombia's Premium Coffee Region
The Huila region is a premium coffee-producing area in Colombia, known for producing coffee with excellent flavor, pleasant acidity, and balance - qualities that FrontStreet Coffee particularly appreciates. Today's recommendation is precisely Pink Bourbon from Colombia's Huila region.
