FrontStreet Coffee - Indonesian Coffee Brand · Tiger Mandheling Coffee Introduction

Mandheling is not a region name, place name, port name, nor a coffee variety name. In fact, its name is actually a phonetic error of the Indonesian Mandheling ethnic group. Locally, coffee beans widely grown in Sumatra and other Indonesian islands are almost all called Mandheling. According to different regions and green bean suppliers, these names are used to distinguish Mandheling from different regions.

01 | Region Introduction

Indonesia is an archipelagic country with main producing areas located on the islands of Sumatra, Java, and Sulawesi. The northern part of Sumatra Island has relatively high terrain elevation. The Aceh Province where Lake Tawar is located and North Sumatra where Lake Toba sits are the main Arabica coffee producing regions. Lake Tawar is located in the Gayo Mountains area of northern Aceh Province, Sumatra. Indonesia, which straddles both sides of the equator, has a humid tropical rainforest climate with abundant rainfall and fertile volcanic soil that provides rich nutrients for coffee. However, due to its remote location and inconvenient transportation, coffee cultivation did not begin until 1924, mostly adopting traditional shade-grown, pesticide-free organic cultivation methods.

In Aceh, coffee is the region's second-largest export economic crop. It is estimated that there are about 60,000 small-scale coffee farmers in the local area, with each person owning about 1-2 hectares of coffee plantation. Indonesia's traditional coffee trade method is a multi-point supply chain. Starting from farmers, through multiple layers of middlemen, large quantities of export goods are gradually assembled. In Indonesia's coffee trading system, direct trade where a single window receives goods from farmers and then arranges for export is quite rare locally.

In the 17th century, Dutch colonists first introduced coffee to Indonesia. These colonists pursued more and faster economic returns. The wet-hulled processing greatly reduced the time spent on farms and significantly lowered labor costs.
