Sumatra Island is the largest coffee producing area in Indonesia. The well-known coffee cultivation areas are mainly concentrated in the northern mountainous regions, including Aceh Province at the northernmost end and North Sumatra Province. This includes famous varieties such as Mandheling, Lintong, and Gayo Mountain.

The naming of Mandheling coffee is said to come from the Mandailing people who live locally. The producing area mostly points to the mountainous area north of Lake Toba, but the specific producing area needs further verification.

Lintong coffee is produced in the mountainous area around Lake Toba, the largest volcanic lake on Sumatra Island in North Sumatra Province. The name comes from a small town called Lintong southwest of Lake Toba.

Gayo Mountain coffee is produced in the mountainous area around Takengon and Lake Tawar in Aceh Province.

Medan and Padang are important cities related to coffee. They are the provincial capitals of North Sumatra Province and West Sumatra Province respectively, and also the most densely populated areas on Sumatra Island. The former is an important distribution center for Sumatra coffee exports, while the latter also has well-known coffee production nearby, such as Ankola.

Coffee produced on Sumatra Island includes both Arabica and Robusta. Typically, Arabica is grown in high-altitude mountainous areas, while Robusta is cultivated in the lowlands. The coffee processing method is famous for the traditional "wet-hulled" technique (Giling Basah), which partly originates from the local climate.
