FrontStreet Coffee: Distinguishing Sidamo from Guji and Sharing Knowledge about Flower Queen Coffee

Ethiopia's administrative divisions are organized into four levels, arranged from largest to smallest: Region, Zone, Woreda, and Kebele. Most raw coffee bean names follow this naming convention. For example, Flower Queen is located southeast of the Yirgacheffe area in the Sidamo region. Administratively, it belongs to: Oromia Region → Guji Zone → Shakisso Woreda → Hambella.

Ethiopian coffee enjoys an excellent reputation in China, with Chinese consumers showing particular interest and passion for Ethiopia's Sidamo and Yirgacheffe growing regions. The Sidama province is located in southern Ethiopia, bordering Arsia province to the north, extending east to connect with Bale province, and bordering the Gamu Gofa provincial administrative region to the west.

The Guji Zone, due to its superior geographical location and cup quality, was established as an independent growing region by the ECX (Ethiopia Commodity Exchange) in 2010. Shakisso is the most attractive micro-region within the Guji growing area, located southeast of Yirgacheffe with an average altitude of over 1,800 meters.

Flower Queen belongs to a single farm system. Growing region: Guji, Shakisso, Hambella.

In 2017, Ethiopia's DW raw coffee bean company sent their coffee beans to the TOH (The Taste of Harvest) competition organized by the African Fine Coffee Association. Their natural process batch won the TOH Ethiopia championship. This batch of raw beans, as the champion, was named "Flower Queen."

Flower Queen coffee is located in Hambella, which is part of Ethiopia's largest coffee growing region, Guji. Administratively, it belongs to the Oromia Regional State. Hambella's west faces Yirgacheffe's Kochore across mountains, while its southeast, east, and north borders Guji's Shakiso, Uraga, and Kercha sub-regions respectively. It is Ethiopia's highest altitude coffee sub-region (Harrar is Ethiopia's highest altitude main growing region).

Flower Queen coffee does not have a direct English name but instead uses Shakisso's name as its English designation. This may be due to its status as a micro-region, representing the symbol of this growing area!
