Kenya Coffee Overview

Kenya is located south of Ethiopia and Yemen, only a few hundred kilometers away from these world-renowned coffee-producing countries. However, Kenya's coffee cultivation history is far less ancient than these two nations. It wasn't until the late 19th century that coffee was brought to Kenya by missionaries, with German and British colonists further developing Kenya's coffee farms.

Kenya coffee trees grow in the mountainous regions north and west of the capital Nairobi. There are two main production areas: one extends from the southern slope of Kenya's peak, Mount Kirinyaga, continuing southward. This area, close to the equator, is Kenya's largest production region. Another smaller production area is the eastern slope of Mount Elgon (located on the border between Uganda and Kenya).

Kenya's mountainous regions are rich with red volcanic soil, where coffee is cultivated at altitudes between 1,500-2,100 meters. Kenya's coffee farms are very small, with some planting areas covering less than one acre. Kenya coffee flowers twice a year: March-April after the rainy season, and October-November. All Kenya coffee is hand-picked. Kenya cultivates Arabica Bourbon coffee trees, which offer a distinctive wine-like flavor and long aftertaste, with a richness and smoothness not found in Ethiopian and Yemeni coffees.

All Kenya coffee beans are uniformly purchased by the Kenya Coffee Board and classified according to bean size, weight, and shape. Grades include: AA++, AA+, AA, and AB. Kenya's main customers are Germany and some particularly discerning Nordic countries. Kenya AA is the highest grade among Kenya coffees, featuring a rich flavor with strong wine aroma. The acidity of this coffee is very subtle, requiring careful tasting to fully appreciate!
