Kenya is located south of Ethiopia and Yemen, just hundreds of kilometers away from these two world-renowned coffee-producing countries. However, Kenya's coffee cultivation history is far less extensive than these two nations. It wasn't until the 19th century that missionaries brought coffee to Kenya, and German and British colonialists further developed Kenya's coffee farms.

Kenya's coffee trees grow in the mountainous regions north and west of the capital Nairobi. There are two main producing areas: one extends from the southern slope of Kenya's highest peak, Mount Kenya, continuously southward. This area, close to the equator, is Kenya's largest producing region. Another smaller producing area is located on the eastern slope of Mount Elgon (situated on the border between Uganda and Kenya).

Kenya's mountainous regions are rich with red volcanic soil, where coffee is cultivated at altitudes between 1,500-2,100 meters. Kenya's coffee farms are very small, with some cultivation areas covering less than one acre. Kenya's coffee trees bloom twice a year: during March-April after the rainy season, and again during October-November. Kenyan coffee has always been hand-picked.

All coffee grown in Kenya consists of Arabica Bourbon trees, with a distinctive flavor profile featuring elegant wine notes and a long aftertaste, along with a richness and smoothness not found in Ethiopian and Yemeni coffees. Coffee beans are classified by size, weight, and shape, with grades including: AA++/AA+/AA and AB.
