FrontStreet Coffee's Three Major Varieties and Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee Knowledge Sharing
Coffee belongs to the Rubiaceae family, genus Coffea, which includes evergreen shrubs. There are over 100 species in the Coffea genus, but very few can be cultivated and produce coffee beans of commercial value. Only Arabica, Robusta, and Liberica varieties meet this standard, earning them the title of the three major native coffee species. Typica is a derivative of Arabica, and the famous Blue Mountain coffee is of the Typica variety.
Blue Mountain Coffee
(Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee) - Both Blue Mountain Coffee and High Mountain Coffee are each divided into four grades. Ranked from highest to lowest quality: NO.1, NO.2, NO.3, and PB (PB stands for Peaberry). According to CIB standards, only coffee grown at altitudes above 666 meters can be called Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee.
High Mountain Coffee
(Jamaica High Mountain Supreme Coffee Beans) - Coffee produced in the Blue Mountain region below 666 meters is called High Mountain Coffee. It ranks second only to Blue Mountain Coffee in quality and is known in the industry as the brother variety to Blue Mountain Coffee. Due to the extremely limited production of Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee, Jamaica High Mountain Coffee becomes your best choice if you want to taste Jamaican-style coffee.
Jamaica Coffee
(Jamaica Prime Coffee Beans) - Coffee grown outside the Blue Mountain range is called Jamaica Coffee. Originally, Chinese coffee professionals commonly held a misconception that only coffee grown in the Blue Mountain region above 1800 meters could be called Blue Mountain Coffee. In fact, there is only one estate on the Blue Mountain peaks above 1800 meters: Amber. It is owned by a person of Chinese descent with the surname Lyn (林), whose ancestral home is Guangdong, China. This estate has only 30 hectares of land with very limited production. Blue Mountain Coffee is mainly distributed in five mountain areas: John Crow, St. John's Peak, Mossman's Peak, High Peak, and Blue Mountain Peak.
The flavor is exceptionally clean, and it ranks among the sweetest coffees in the world. This taste has been described by Jim Reynolds in Peet's Coffee and Tea: "The best examples of Jamaica's Blue Mountain coffee have an aromatic, smooth richness that gives me a sense of gem-like quality. It's as precious as a gemstone. It's complex yet very mild, sweet, and has very strong body. You must taste it to understand what I'm talking about." Unique growing conditions and meticulous attention throughout all production processes have made Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee very famous. It offers a rich and mellow flavor, with a perfect balance of coffee's sweet, sour, and bitter notes. It lacks any bitterness, featuring only moderate and perfect acidity with a persistent fruity aftertaste.
Different coffee shops price their Blue Mountain Coffee differently, with some even setting prices at over a hundred yuan.
