FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Indonesian Golden Mandheling Coffee Characteristics

Golden Mandheling

Golden Mandheling is a registered Mandheling variety by PWN Company. PWN Company has registered Golden Mandheling as a trademark, which means that only Golden Mandheling produced by PWN Company can be considered authentic "Golden Mandheling" from now on.

PWN Company's full name is Pwani Coffee Company, which is a very famous coffee acquisition company locally in Indonesia, mainly acquiring Mandheling coffee. Almost all the best producing areas in Indonesia have been acquired by it, so most of the beans from PWN Company are unique specialty products. Golden Mandheling is a product produced by this company. After purchasing the raw beans, they undergo multiple manual hand selections to select full, flawless beans. Finally, these fine beans that have gone through layer-by-layer selection like a talent show can be classified as Golden Mandheling.

According to the oral account of PWN's Mr. Du, when he was young helping his father with the coffee business, it should have been the late 1970s to early 1980s. Some Japanese people, through Japanese enterprises' rubber production department in North Sumatra, approached Mr. Du (at that time, PWN was engaged in trading rubber and coffee beans and other commodities), asking him to help find the delicious coffee that Japanese soldiers drank during the colonial period. Mr. Du, who accepted the commission, collected many high-quality coffee beans from various producing areas in North Sumatra and sent them to Japan for evaluation. Among them, one variety was so delicious that the Japanese people were captivated. They asked what kind of coffee this was? Mr. Du wanted to say that their rubber department was near Mandailing, and because business sources were inconvenient to disclose, he casually gave it a name called "MANDHLING (Mandheling)." From then on, the term Mandheling became famous overseas through the export of coffee beans from Medan.

By the late 1990s, many peers had stolen PWN's brand name for business, so Mr. Du officially applied for trademark registration in 2001. However, Mandheling was originally a place name and also a broad term that could not be registered. When processing the highest-grade parchment beans from North Sumatra, the golden brilliance under the sunlight gave Mr. Du a sudden inspiration, and he thought of the name Golden Mandheling, which also allowed him to successfully register it. From then on, PWN's highest-grade beans were called "Golden Mandheling."

Wet-Hulling Method

Indonesian Mandheling coffee processing generally adopts the semi-washed method. Coffee farmers harvest ripe coffee beans, remove the outer skin and pulp but retain the membrane tissue on the coffee beans. After the water soaking fermentation process, the inferior beans that are not solid and float on the water surface are removed. The solid, sinking good beans with surface film are sun-dried, either elevated or directly placed on the ground. Finally, a dryer is used to make the moisture content reach a unified standard. The most unique aspect is the coffee beans wrapped in parchment paper with film still attached.

Flavor Characteristics:

Golden Mandheling has high-quality herbal plant aromas, with more intense caramel sweetness, relatively calm and elegant fruit acidity, rich sweetness, thick, wild spice flavors.
