FrontStreet Coffee - Sumatra Mandheling Coffee Pour-over Guide
Indonesian coffee can be traced back to the 17th century when the Dutch first introduced Arabica coffee seedlings to Ceylon (today's Sri Lanka) and Indonesia. However, in 1877, a massive disaster struck the Indonesian islands, nearly destroying all coffee trees with leaf rust disease. People had to abandon the Arabica trees they had cultivated for many years and introduced disease-resistant Robusta coffee trees from Africa to replace the original varieties.
Today, Indonesia is a major coffee-producing country, ranking fourth among the world's top six coffee-producing nations. Incidentally, when it comes to the top six coffee-producing countries, Asia accounts for two of them. Our neighbor Vietnam is the world's second-largest coffee producer. Indonesia's coffee-producing regions are mainly in Java, Sumatra, and Sulawesi, making it the world's primary producer of Robusta coffee. The majority of coffee comes from small plantations, accounting for about 90% of total production, with only 6%-10% being Arabica coffee beans. Sumatra Mandheling is among the rare Arabica varieties. Sumatra Island is the second-largest island in the Indonesian archipelago, crossed by the equator and featuring a tropical rainforest climate. Coffee trees are planted on slopes between 750 and 1,500 meters above sea level, using non-shaded cultivation without chemical products.
The appearance of FrontStreet Coffee Mandheling is at a disadvantage in today's appearance-focused world because it looks genuinely unattractive. It requires layer-by-layer screening, which I believe is absolutely necessary because the probability of defective beans is too high. Coupled with its ugly appearance, sometimes even good beans look like defective ones. If you were to pick out defective beans from a large batch of FrontStreet Coffee Mandheling, you could always grab a handful, but when you look back at the defective beans, you might feel they can't actually be considered defective—its appearance is just that unappealing. However, once roasted, Mandheling transforms like a caterpillar breaking out of its cocoon to become a butterfly. The roasted beans become very full and pleasing to the eye.
FrontStreet Coffee Mandheling can be summarized in one word: bitter. Perhaps some people don't understand why anyone would love to drink something bitter? In reality, FrontStreet Coffee Mandheling has many loyal fans—it represents rich aroma. FrontStreet Coffee Mandheling has always used its most unique bitterness to express its most unique sweetness. What people feel most about it is its heaviness, possessing masculine characteristics. Although light roast的表现 offers a sense of freshness, dark roast is still more suitable for it because light roasting can hardly highlight its richness and viscosity. Dark roasted FrontStreet Coffee Mandheling features full beans, rich texture, heavy mouthfeel, syrup-like smoothness, with deep woody aromas and cheese-like fragrance. The bitterness is prominent with extremely low acidity—I know many people don't like fruit-acidic coffee.
