You often see "Golden Mandheling" mentioned, but what exactly is it? To understand Golden Mandheling, we must first talk about PWN, an abbreviation frequently associated with Mandheling coffee. PWN stands for Pwani Coffee Company, a renowned Indonesian coffee acquisition company that primarily deals with Mandheling coffee. The company has acquired coffee from almost all of Indonesia's finest growing regions, so most beans from PWN are unique specialty coffees.

Golden Mandheling is a product of this company, but PWN has registered the Golden Mandheling trademark and is the only company that owns this trademark. This means only Golden Mandheling produced by PWN can be considered authentic "Golden Mandheling."

Outside Indonesia, due to the lack of trademark protection, Golden Mandheling is recklessly used by unscrupulous merchants. Many beans on the market bearing the Golden Mandheling name but not produced by PWN should actually be called specialty Mandheling. However, true coffee connoisseurs know that PWN's Golden Mandheling represents the highest level of Indonesian Mandheling.

Golden Mandheling can be seen as a custom version of Mandheling with entirely strict standardized processing.

These beans undergo strict control from coffee cherry picking to final processing, handled by the most experienced craftsmen for selection and processing. Every step is handled with extreme care, using only the finest coffee cherries of the season. Due to strict selection standards, Golden Mandheling production is limited each season. After nearly 60 years of heritage spanning two generations, the company maintains five strict selection processes, with special processing methods bringing everyone the finest Golden Mandheling.

Origin

Originally, PWN's Golden Mandheling was sourced from the famous Lintong region. However, to increase production, coffee farmers in the Lintong region planted many new trees, leading to quality decline. Therefore, PWN shifted its sourcing to GAYO Mountain in Aceh province, where conflict had just subsided. This area was once rebel territory but boasts uniquely favorable coffee-growing conditions. Due to long-term isolation, coffee trees here remain traditional Typica and local hybrid varieties, with processing methods still maintaining traditional practices. In recent years, GAYO Mountain Mandheling has gained popularity among coffee enthusiasts. Conservatively speaking, GAYO's quality, if not surpassing the Lintong region, is at least on par with the former Lintong region.

Flavor Profile

Upon first sip, there's a honey aroma, followed by a rich body and dark chocolate notes. The rich complexity combines elegant freshness with strong character in a single cup. There's almost none of the typical herbal, earthy, or woody notes found in regular Mandheling, with stronger caramel sweetness.
