The Baoshan small-grain coffee growing area has a dry-hot valley climate characteristic: distinct dry and wet seasons, rainy and hot seasons occurring simultaneously, cold-free winters, and cool summers. From October to April is the dry season, with low humidity, few clouds, many sunny days, high daytime temperatures, and large temperature differences between day and night. From May to September is the wet season, with more water vapor, many clouds, many cloudy days, not-so-high daytime temperatures, and small temperature differences between day and night. These special climate conditions are very favorable for coffee growth.
Baoshan began large-scale coffee cultivation in 1952 and now has over 60 years of history. In summary, Baoshan produces good coffee as a result of the combined effects of altitude, geographical location, climate, and planting management experience. Of course, it also includes other factors such as soil and environment.
Baoshan mainly cultivates coffee varieties such as Typica, Bourbon, and Catimor. Typica and Bourbon belong to the small-grain Arabica species. Catimor is a medium-grain hybrid of Arabica and Robusta.
Typica has poor resistance to diseases, pests, and drought. Those trees with withered coffee fruits on their treetops are of the Typica variety. In contrast, Catimor appears more vigorous, the leaves on the treetops haven't fallen off, and generally there won't be withered phenomena.
Yunnan's highest altitude polar coffee, Catimor & Caturra, grows in harsh high mountains with rocky and sandy soil rich in minerals, producing hard beans.
