The Nariño Region: Premium Coffee Growing Paradise
One of the most renowned coffee-growing regions is the Nariño province. Its actual name is Nariño, which translates directly to "Narino," and is rendered as "Nariño" in the Chinese coffee community. Nariño possesses natural conditions ideal for producing high-quality coffee, located near the equator at approximately 1° north latitude with abundant year-round sunshine; most altitudes are above 1,600 meters, and snow-capped peaks are not uncommon within its borders.
The steep mountains and narrow, steep slopes create temperature diversity, while warm, humid air currents rising from the valleys protect high-altitude coffee plantations from frost threats, allowing coffee to be successfully cultivated at heights of 2,300 meters. Volcanic soil provides rich nutrients for coffee growth.
Nariño's rainfall follows a peaked distribution pattern throughout the year, featuring one rainy season that extends from October of the current year to May of the following year, while the dry season comprises the three months of June, July, and August.
However, even during the dry months, coffee farmers need not worry excessively. When warm currents brought by trade winds from the southern continent meet cooler nights, water vapor is generated, replenishing moisture for the coffee trees.
Typically, after continuous dry weather followed by rainfall, coffee trees enter their flowering period. In Nariño, coffee flowering begins after the first rainfall in September, with the corresponding harvest season starting from April of the following year. In high-altitude growing areas, the harvest season may extend until August.
Nariño coffee offers balanced and delicate flavors, with a clean profile and rich notes of apricot, grapefruit, and toffee, making it highly favored by coffee connoisseurs. Meanwhile, Colombian coffee beans are classified into over 200 quality grades, with Supremo being the highest grade, followed by Excelso; however, only Supremo-grade coffee with beans size 18 (diameter 18/64 inches) or larger can be classified as specialty coffee. Nariño coffee achieves Supremo-grade quality, which is inseparable from the region's selection of high-quality Caturra varieties and its excellent natural conditions.
