The Geisha Revolution: Coffee's Extraordinary Journey
Like a hurricane, Geisha's powerful force has swept across the globe. This coffee revolution has come with such momentum that even the long-reigning king and queen of the coffee kingdom—Jamaica Blue Mountain and Hawaii Kona—must step aside. This wild variety, native to Ethiopia, has undergone countless battles and is now planted in major coffee-producing regions worldwide. Its best ambassador comes from Panama's La Esmeralda estate.
Geisha, coincidentally with the same pronunciation as the Japanese word "geisha," was exported from Kenya, wandered through Tanzania and Costa Rica, and was eventually transplanted to Panama in the 1960s. After nearly half a century of obscurity, it suddenly made a stunning debut, defeating perennial champions like Bourbon, Caturra, Catuai, and Typica to sweep the first prizes in Panama's National Coffee Bean Cupping Competition for three consecutive years in 2005, 2006, and 2007. In 2007, Geisha again claimed victory in the International Coffee Tasting Competition hosted by the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA), with a winning bid of $130 per pound—setting the highest price record ever for competition beans. Reportedly, subsequent Panama National Treasure Bean competitions were divided into Geisha and non-Geisha categories to prevent Geisha from stealing the spotlight from other varieties. Geisha belongs to the Typica family, yet it only rose to prominence over seventy years after leaving Ethiopia, further confirming the notion that Ethiopia is the genetic treasure trove of Arabica—casually giving away a variety is enough to create waves in the coffee market.
While the market generally considers Geisha expensive, looking back at the annual 2018 Red Label Geisha auction results, the top bid reached $340 per pound! Geisha's extremely low production is merely an excuse for its high price—the truly captivating factor is Geisha's uniquely alluring coffee flavor, which is the most important reason for its extraordinary value. Starting today, Don Quixote accepts custom roasting orders for Panama La Esmeralda Geisha: ① 50g of premium Geisha coffee beans priced at 180 yuan. ② 100g of premium Geisha coffee beans priced at 280 yuan. ③ 227g of premium Geisha coffee beans priced at 600 yuan.
FrontStreet Coffee's Introduction to Geisha
Green Label Geisha
Green Label Geisha offers aromas of chamomile and honeysuckle, with sweet peach notes when sipped, along with citrus, lemon, and bergamot flavors, complemented by creamy and honey sweetness.
Pour-Over Method
Parameters: 15g of coffee grounds, V60 dripper, water temperature 90°C, powder-to-water ratio 1:15, grind size BG 5R (58% pass-through rate on China standard #20 sieve).
Technique: Use 30g of water for a 30-second bloom, then pour quickly with a small water stream to 125g in segments. When the water level drops and is about to expose the coffee bed, continue pouring to 227g and stop. Remove the dripper just as the coffee bed is about to be exposed. Start timing from the bloom, with total extraction time around two minutes.
Tasting Notes: Green Label Geisha smells of citrus acidity and brown sugar sweetness. The entry brings citrus, lime, and bergamot flavors, with cocoa and cream notes in the middle, finishing with green tea and honey aromas. The brown sugar aftertaste lingers persistently, with a finish of chrysanthemum and subtle honeysuckle floral notes.
