The Heart of Contemporary Coffee: FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe

Yirgacheffe, from Ethiopia - the origin country of Arabica coffee, represents the core of contemporary coffee culture. For those who love or wish to explore specialty coffee, Yirgacheffe is a region you must deeply understand and savor.

FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe Roasting

Yirgacheffe coffee beans, renowned for their numerous ancient varieties, actually contain many coffee beans of varying sizes, each representing different moisture content and composition. To highlight the Yirgacheffe beans' characteristic "fragrance, sweetness, and beautiful fruit acidity," every second tests the roaster's skill.

FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe Flavor Profile

The time-honored Arabica varieties, high-altitude growing environment, and generations of coffee cultivation, harvesting, and processing experience combine to create a smooth, richly layered delicious coffee flavor profile.

Yirgacheffe Pour-Over

Yirgacheffe beans from different regions, harvest times, and processing methods each offer unique pour-over experiences. For those who particularly use pour-over methods, this understanding comes most naturally.

FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe Price

Compare this to the once-popular Panama Geisha coffee, renowned for growing coffee beans with African-style floral and citrus notes typical of Ethiopian beans in the American region. Considering Panama Geisha's high price despite its Ethiopian origins, calling FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe coffee beans the "king of cost-performance value" is truly no exaggeration.

"Let Us Settle and Thrive on This Wetland"

The Yirgacheffe origin is located in Ethiopia - the birthplace of Arabica coffee beans. As a natural wetland, Yirgacheffe originally meant "Let us settle and thrive on this wetland."

Originally part of the Sidama region, the coffee beans produced near Yirgacheffe town developed unique floral and citrus characteristics, leading to its establishment as an independent famous coffee-producing region in Ethiopia. Today, fewer and fewer people use "Yirgacheffe Sidama" when searching for Yirgacheffe coffee beans.

Ethiopia's official language is "Amharic," and the English name "Yirgacheffe" commonly used in the Western world is a proper transliteration, so it's not surprising if you also see it translated as "Yirgacheff."

Yirgacheffe is not only the most popular single-origin coffee in the specialty coffee world but even Starbucks once coveted this name. In 2004, Starbucks attempted to register "Yirgacheffe" as its brand trademark, which angered Ethiopian authorities and global coffee enthusiasts. It wasn't until 2007, when the Ethiopian government filed an international lawsuit, that the Yirgacheffe coffee name was liberated.

Ethiopia is located on the eastern side of the African continent. The "Gedeo zone" to which Yirgacheffe belongs is located in Ethiopia's southwestern "Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region."

Origin Information

FrontStreet Coffee's natural-processed Yirgacheffe is produced at the Aricha processing station. About 700 small-scale coffee farmers in the surrounding area deliver their ripe coffee cherries here for processing in exchange for cash. The processing station selects usable coffee cherries and places them, with pulp and skin completely intact, on raised beds for natural drying. This method prevents contact with the ground during the drying process, avoiding earthy off-flavors and creating exceptionally clean fruit flavors.

The dark brown coffee cherries are professionally stored to allow the full flavor development. Before shipment, the processing station removes the coffee beans from the cherries, ensuring the sweetness is fully preserved.
