Pink Bourbon was first discovered in the town of Palestine, Huila Province, Colombia, and is currently mainly cultivated in the Huila region of Colombia. Pink Bourbon is a natural hybrid of Yellow Bourbon and Red Bourbon. Yellow Bourbon and Red Bourbon belong to dominant traits expressed through dominant genes, with strong breeding stability. However, the new variety Pink Bourbon, resulting from their hybridization, belongs to recessive traits expressed through recessive genes, and the offspring produced through hybrid breeding are highly prone to trait segregation.
Furthermore, coffee trees rely on pollen for sexual reproduction, and other dominant trait varieties are highly likely to pollinate Pink Bourbon, thus severely affecting the flowering and fruiting of the next season. This is the main reason why Yellow Bourbon and Red Bourbon are more common, while Pink Bourbon is rarely seen.
At this point, some might ask: "Does this mean there won't be any Pink Bourbon next year after drinking it this year?" Actually, this is not the case. Firstly, the pace of natural hybridization between Yellow Bourbon and Red Bourbon to produce Pink Bourbon will not stop. Secondly, almost all Arabica coffee is self-pollinating, meaning that the coffee flowers awaiting pollination and the pollen may come from the same plant, or even the same flower, which greatly improves the stability of recessive trait expression. Therefore, when cultivating Pink Bourbon, a relatively independent growing environment is essential to avoid genetic contamination from other varieties.
There is another theory regarding the genetics of Pink Bourbon. Some studies have found that Pink Bourbon is a natural hybrid of Colombia and Caturra. Caturra is an excellent variety of Bourbon, while Colombia, as a coffee variety heavily promoted for cultivation in Colombia, has obvious advantages due to its partial Robusta genes - it is high-yielding and resistant to leaf rust disease. However, its drawback is mediocre flavor performance and a lack of delicate sweet and sour notes.
Undeniably, variety genetics are certainly important, but ultimately, coffee is still an agricultural crop. Its high quality originates from the combination of many factors such as geographical environment, variety, cultivation and maintenance, and harvesting and processing. Pink Bourbon happens to be fortunate in this regard.
