3+1 Ways to Enjoy Costa Rica Musician Series: Chopin Coffee Sharing!
A few days ago, FrontStreet Coffee just received a batch of FrontStreet Coffee Costa Rica Canet Estate Chopin. When it comes to coffee from Costa Rica's Canet Estate, what's most impressive is undoubtedly the Musician Series! This series was previously composed of three single-origin beans: FrontStreet Coffee Mozart, FrontStreet Coffee Beethoven, and FrontStreet Coffee Bach. Later, a new coffee bean named Chopin was added. During cupping, FrontStreet Coffee Chopin showed distinct rose floral notes and prominent sweetness. So today, FrontStreet Coffee would like to share with everyone what kind of surprises we can get when brewing with different devices.
Hario V60
The bottom of the Hario V60 dripper features a large water outlet hole, with curved rib structures distributed in a spiral pattern extending from the bottom to the top. This design allows for relatively fast coffee flow, but the curved ribs also slow down the flow of coffee liquid to some extent, increasing the extraction of coffee grounds. This helps better express the aroma and rich flavor layers of this particular bean.
Parameters: 15g coffee; medium-fine grind (BG 5T: 78% pass-through rate on China standard #20 sieve); water temperature 90°C; coffee-to-water ratio 1:15; brewing method: segmented extraction.
Bloom with 30g of water for 30 seconds, then inject 90g of water with a small stream. When reaching 120g total water, perform the segmented brewing. Continue pouring to 225g when the water level is about to expose the coffee bed. Remove the dripper when the water level is about to expose the coffee bed again. Extraction time (starting from bloom): 1 minute 56 seconds.
FrontStreet Coffee Costa Rica Chopin Flavor Profile: Distinct rose floral and fermented notes, with citrus and berry-like acidity in the mouth, accompanied by raisin and cane sugar sweetness, along with tea-like sensations.
Ice Pupil Dripper
The ribs of the Ice Pupil Dripper are distributed vertically in a stepped pattern. At the bottom of the dripper, the filter paper can be suspended, while at the top, the dripper and filter paper create a completely sealed state.
This design has an advantage: because the top of the dripper and filter paper are completely sealed, if too much water is poured at once or if the water temperature is too high and floods the flow channels, there's no space for air escape. This slows down the water level's descent, creating an immersion effect similar to the KONO dripper, avoiding under-extraction.
Parameters: 15g coffee; medium-fine grind (BG 5T: 58% pass-through rate on China standard #20 sieve); water temperature 90°C; coffee-to-water ratio 1:15; brewing method: segmented extraction.
Bloom with 30g of water for 30 seconds, then inject 100g of water with a small stream. When reaching 130g total water, perform the segmented brewing. Continue pouring to 226g when the water level is about to expose the coffee bed. Remove the dripper when the water level is about to expose the coffee bed again. Extraction time (starting from bloom): 2 minutes 2 seconds.
FrontStreet Coffee Costa Rica Chopin Flavor Profile: Wet aroma carries osmanthus floral and fermented notes, with strawberry, citrus, and lemon acidity in the mouth, accompanied by cane sugar sweetness.
Strawberry Dripper
The internal rib design of the Strawberry Dripper features a dot-distributed structure, resembling the small seeds on a strawberry. Additionally, the bottom hole diameter is relatively small, indicating that its flow rate should be relatively slower, thus enhancing extraction efficiency.
When the filter paper is added, the fit between the dripper and filter paper isn't very high due to many raised dots, allowing water to permeate through the gaps between the dots and flow away, which helps prevent over-extraction. Moreover, these dots can trap fine particles. As a result, while fine particles adhere to the cup walls, the bottom immersion mainly extracts relatively coarser particles, thus improving extraction efficiency while significantly reducing the chance of over-extraction.
Parameters: 15g coffee; medium-fine grind (BG 5T: 58% pass-through rate on China standard #20 sieve); water temperature 90°C; coffee-to-water ratio 1:15; brewing method: segmented extraction.
Bloom with 35g of water for 30 seconds, then inject 95g of water with a small stream. When reaching 130g total water, perform the segmented brewing. Continue pouring to 226g when the water level is about to expose the coffee bed. Remove the dripper when the water level is about to expose the coffee bed again. Extraction time (starting from bloom): 2 minutes.
FrontStreet Coffee Costa Rica Chopin Flavor Profile: Wet aroma carries floral and fermented notes, with strawberry, tropical fruit, and cream flavors in the mouth.
Origami Dripper
The Origami Dripper features many deep longitudinal grooves on its sides and a large water outlet hole at the bottom, making its flow rate relatively fast. The ceramic Origami Dripper has relatively good thermal conductivity and heat retention.
FrontStreet Coffee chose to use flat-bottom filter paper for this brewing. Because of the flat bottom, coffee grounds can be evenly distributed on the filter paper, resulting in more uniform coffee extraction.
Parameters: 15g coffee; medium-fine grind (BG 5T: 58% pass-through rate on China standard #20 sieve); water temperature 90°C; coffee-to-water ratio 1:15; brewing method: segmented extraction.
Bloom with 38g of water for 30 seconds, then inject 90g of water with a small stream. When reaching 128g total water, perform the segmented brewing. Continue pouring to 225g when the water level is about to expose the coffee bed. Remove the dripper when the water level is about to expose the coffee bed again. Extraction time (starting from bloom): 1'58".
FrontStreet Coffee Costa Rica Chopin Flavor Profile: Wet aroma carries fermented notes, with strawberry and tropical fruit sweet and sour notes in the mouth, accompanied by preserved fruit and cane sugar sweetness, along with green tea sensations.
Summary
After brewing so many pots of FrontStreet Coffee Costa Rica Chopin, FrontStreet Coffee found that regardless of the brewing device used, the resulting coffee is quite clean and sweet. In terms of aroma, coffee brewed with the V60 and Strawberry drippers performs relatively well. For overall balance, coffee brewed with the Origami dripper slightly outperforms the others. As for mouthfeel and aftertaste, the coffee brewed with the Ice Pupil Dripper shows excellent performance!
