AeroPress Inverted Coffee Tutorial | What Coffee is Suitable for AeroPress? How is the AeroPress?
The AeroPress offers versatile brewing methods with no absolute rules—let your imagination guide you to make a great cup of coffee. However you want to use it, you can. It's precisely because of the diverse brewing possibilities of the AeroPress, its operability, and the controllability of coffee extraction factors that the World AeroPress Championships now exist.
AeroPress Extraction Principle
In fact, the AeroPress is not only an ingenious creative achievement but also a practical product. It combines the immersion extraction method of French press, the paper filtration of pour-over coffee, and the rapid, pressurized extraction principle of espresso. Theoretically, coffee brewed with AeroPress can combine the richness of espresso, the purity of pour-over coffee, and the smoothness of French press.
Flavor Characteristics of AeroPress Coffee
Clean and smooth texture: The high-density paper filter of AeroPress produces very clean coffee. With appropriate warm water and proper pressure, you can brew coffee with low acidity, no bitterness, but full of flavor.
Rich flavor: Complete immersion brewing maximizes and evenly extracts coffee, preserving the complete flavor profile of the coffee.
Rich body: Make a perfect cup of coffee in 1 minute, with actual pressing time of only 20 seconds. However, due to the pressurized extraction during the pressing process, you can achieve a richer body than other immersion coffee methods.
The AeroPress is probably the simplest coffee brewing method after French press. If you explore this method deeply, you can discover many unexpected variations, making it a versatile "cure-all" solution. The AeroPress was officially launched in 2005 by the American company AEROBIE, and immediately received strong response upon its debut due to its ease of use, efficiency, and delicious coffee output. This entirely new coffee brewing device was invented by Alan Adler, a mechanical engineering lecturer at Stanford University. With the hosting of the World AeroPress Championships (WAC), AeroPress has become increasingly well-known.
Its structure resembles a syringe. During use, place ground coffee and hot water in its "barrel," then press down the plunger, and coffee will flow through the paper filter into the container. The principle combines the immersion extraction method of French press, the paper filtration of drip coffee (pour-over), and the rapid, pressurized extraction principle of espresso. Through different combinations of grind size, water temperature, pressing speed, as well as immersion time and rhythm, you can brew coffee with wild flavors similar to espresso, or coffee with refreshing taste and rich layers like pour-over. This "cure-all" capability has unique advantages for expressing the flavor of a particular bean.
FrontStreet Coffee shares how to make a cup of AeroPress coffee using the inverted method!
You'll need to prepare: AeroPress, AeroPress专用滤纸 (or metal filter), 18g of freshly roasted FrontStreet Coffee Huilan beans, hot water (94-98°C), pouring kettle (preferably gooseneck), coffee cup, coffee grinder (recommended)
Brewing Parameters:
Grind setting: 90% pass-through rate on #20 sieve (finer than regular pour-over grind)
Coffee-to-water ratio: 1:11 (approximately 200ml)
Water temperature: 90°C
Extraction method: Inverted
We can pre-place two circular paper filters on the filter cap, then wet them with water to make them adhere. (If you don't have circular filters, you can cut regular filters to size)
- Assemble the plunger and chamber, then push the plunger to about the ④ mark and invert!
- Pour in the ground FrontStreet Coffee Huilan coffee, then add an equal amount of hot water and start timing!
- Use the stir stick to stir the coffee grounds in the chamber for ten seconds. (slow circular motion)
- Attach the filter cap with the adhered paper filters to the chamber.
- Then secure it onto your prepared container.
- When the time reaches one minute, flip it over and begin pressing down to "press out" the coffee.
That's it—extraction complete! The total time is about 1 minute and 20 seconds. The inverted method is more stable compared to the standard method, which greatly reduces the difficulty for beginners. The FrontStreet Coffee Huilan brewed this way tastes rich and delicious, with very full nutty aroma—excellent!
