We recently acquired several batches of Gesha Village beans, including Gold Label, Red Label, and Chaka. Many friends have asked our editor about the differences between [FrontStreet Coffee's Gesha Village · Chaka] and [FrontStreet Coffee's Panama · Flower Butterfly], since both are Gesha blends.

The beans of [FrontStreet Coffee's Panama · Flower Butterfly] appear slightly more elongated than those of [FrontStreet Coffee's Gesha Village · Chaka], while [FrontStreet Coffee's Gesha Village · Chaka] beans are comparatively rounder. Both varieties show relatively uniform particle size.

Roast Profile Comparison

[FrontStreet Coffee's Gesha Village · Chaka] Roast Profile

Roaster: Yangjia 800N (550g batch size)

Charge at 190°C with damper at 3, heat at 130. Return to temperature at 1'45". At 148°C, open damper to 4. At 166°C, reduce heat to 100, damper unchanged. At 178°C, adjust heat to 80, damper unchanged.

At 8'24", ugly wrinkles and black spots appear on the bean surface, with the toast aroma clearly transitioning to coffee aroma, which can be defined as the prelude to first crack. At this point, listen carefully for the first crack sound. First crack begins at 9'08", damper adjusted to 5 (adjust heat very carefully, not so low as to eliminate cracking sounds). Development after first crack: 1'28", discharge at 192.5°C.

Agtron bean color value: 78.4 (above image), Agtron ground color value: 91.9 (below image), Roast Delta value: 13.5.

[FrontStreet Coffee's Panama · Flower Butterfly] Roast Profile

Roaster: Yangjia 800N (550g batch size)

Charge at 200°C with damper at 3, turn off heat for 30 seconds then adjust to 150. Return to temperature at 1'46". At 140°C, open damper to 4. At 166°C, reduce heat to 120, damper unchanged. At 176°C, adjust heat to 90, damper unchanged. At 180°C, reduce heat again to 60.

At 7'34", ugly wrinkles and black spots appear on the bean surface, with the toast aroma clearly transitioning to coffee aroma, which can be defined as the prelude to first crack. At this point, listen carefully for the first crack sound. First crack begins at 8'27", damper adjusted to 5 (adjust heat very carefully, not so low as to eliminate cracking sounds). Development after first crack: 1'45", discharge at 193.5°C.

Brewing Comparison

Method: Bloom with 30g of water for 30 seconds, then pour to 120g. Wait for the water level to drop until the coffee bed is visible, then pour to 227g. Remove the dripper when the coffee bed becomes visible. Total extraction time: 1'53".

Flavor: Citrus, grapefruit, plum, nuts, cream, oolong tea, floral notes, brown sugar. Overall feeling is relatively full-bodied.

[FrontStreet Coffee's Panama · Flower Butterfly]

Parameters: HARIO V60/90°C/1:15/Grind size BG 5R (58% pass-through rate on China standard #20 sieve)/Brewing method: Poured over in stages

Method: Bloom with 30g of water for 30 seconds, then pour to 124g. Wait for the water level to drop until the coffee bed is visible, then pour to 228g. Remove the dripper when the coffee bed becomes visible. Total extraction time: 1'58".

Flavor: Citrus, grapefruit, plum, nuts, almond, orange, green tea, floral notes, honey. Overall feeling is relatively refreshing and clean, with prominent floral notes.

Actually, both beans feature citrus fruit flavor profiles,毕竟 they are both dominated by Gesha varieties. However, when compared, the flavor differences between them are quite significant. Our editor feels that [FrontStreet Coffee's Panama · Flower Butterfly] has relatively cleaner and clearer flavors, with body slightly lower than [FrontStreet Coffee's Gesha Village · Chaka]. While [FrontStreet Coffee's Chaka] has relatively higher body, its nutty flavors are also quite prominent. Both Gesha blends have their own distinct styles.
