Costa Rica Musicians Series Coffee Beans: Beethoven's Story and Pour-Over Flavor Profile
If music and coffee are a perfect match, then naming coffee after musicians must be something you've never imagined! As a common daily beverage, coffee has developed rapidly in recent years. The development of specialty coffee has greatly promoted the growth of the coffee industry and brought more attention to post-harvest processing. The coffee we're sharing today is FrontStreet Coffee's Beethoven from Costa Rica's Musician Series coffee beans—that's right, coffee named after musicians!
Beethoven, known as the "Saint of Music" and "King of Symphonies," was a coffee enthusiast who defied authority. It is said that every morning he would count coffee beans to relieve boredom, and he would always count exactly 60 coffee beans before brewing a satisfying cup of coffee.
Introduction to Beethoven Coffee's Origin, Variety, and Processing Method
Among Costa Rica's many excellent producing regions, one stands out as particularly famous—Tarrazú. Tarrazú is extremely renowned in the specialty coffee world and is one of the world's major coffee-producing regions.
Tarrazú is located in the fertile volcanic region of Central America, with a humid climate and fertile volcanic soil. Abundant rainfall throughout the year, high altitude, and dense natural forest shade provide an exceptional growing environment for coffee. Nearly 95% of coffee beans produced in the high mountains of Tarrazú are classified as Strictly Hard Beans (SHB), typically grown at altitudes above 1,500 meters.
Hacienda Cañetón is located in the highest altitude area of the Tarrazú region and is Costa Rica's most intensive area for fruit cultivation. Hacienda Cañetón primarily grows passion fruit, with coffee production being quite scarce. Coffee is grown only in one specific area and receives special care.
Yellow Catuai (Catuai Amarillo) is a hybrid of Mundo Novo and Caturra, first cultivated in 1949 by Brazil's Instituto Agronomico de Campinas.
FrontStreet Coffee's Beethoven beans differ from other FrontStreet Coffee Musician Series coffee bean processing methods. FrontStreet Coffee's Beethoven uses the washed processing method. After harvesting, the beans undergo a screening process to remove underripe or overripe beans. The pulp is then removed, and the mucilage is washed off with a centrifugal washing machine to avoid fermentation. The beans are then washed with clean water and finally dried on shaded raised beds for 12-14 days, with constant turning to ensure even drying. Beans processed through washing method have a cleaner and brighter taste profile.
