Yunnan Arabica Coffee
Yunnan Arabica coffee refers to Arabica coffee beans cultivated in China's Yunnan region. It's called "small-grain coffee" because when missionaries first introduced coffee to Yunnan, they selected the plants with smaller fruit sizes and superior flavors from the available coffee varieties, calling them "small fruit/small grain coffee." Later, this variety was confirmed to be Arabica coffee.
Overview of Yunnan Coffee Regions
Yunnan's natural conditions are remarkably similar to Colombia's—low latitude, high altitude, and significant day-night temperature differences. Cupping analysis shows that the produced small-grain coffee belongs to the mellow aroma category, with flavors similar to Colombian coffee.
According to FrontStreet Coffee's research, Yunnan province has 1.5673 million mu of coffee cultivation area, primarily distributed in tropical regions between 500-1800 meters elevation in the Nujiang, Lancangjiang, Red River, and Jinsha River basins. The southern region borders Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar, while the northern region reaches the Jinsha River basin.
This mainly includes 31 counties (districts, cities) across 8 prefectures and cities such as Pu'er City, Lincang City, Baoshan City, Dehong Prefecture, and Xishuangbanna Prefecture. Among them, Pu'er City has 785,000 mu, Lincang City has 422,500 mu, Baoshan City has 136,500 mu, Dehong Prefecture has 113,000 mu, and Xishuangbanna Prefecture has 94,700 mu.
Coffee from low-altitude areas can be harvested starting in September because these regions are more hot and humid, accelerating coffee growth and ripening. High-altitude areas, however, begin harvesting in late November. The day-night temperature differences at high elevations prolong coffee growth and ripening, allowing sufficient time for the development of more refined flavors. Therefore, Yunnan Arabica coffee from elevations above 1200m exhibits more refined and full-bodied flavors!
Yunnan Coffee Varieties
Currently, Yunnan primarily grows the Catimor coffee variety, introduced by Nestlé. Due to its high yield and low maintenance costs, it's widely cultivated by coffee farmers in the Yunnan region.
This variety is a new hybrid developed in 1959 by the Portuguese Coffee Leaf Rust Research Center (CIFC), crossing Timor and Caturra. Catimor's characteristics include high productivity, dwarf plants suitable for dense planting, and good disease resistance. Because Catimor contains Robusta genes, it exhibits more noticeable bitterness and grassy flavors than pure Arabica varieties, with slight disadvantages in terms of cleanliness, fruit notes, and richness.
However, with more scientific management of coffee regions in recent years and farmers adopting more advanced cultivation methods, Yunnan Catimor coffee quality and flavor have significantly improved!
As the demand for higher coffee quality increases, many coffee farmers are also cultivating the Typica variety. Yunnan actually has Typica as its oldest variety, but its poor disease resistance led people to abandon quality in favor of quantity at the time. However, the clean flavor characteristics of Typica are indeed something that Catimor cannot replicate.
In 2013, FrontStreet Coffee began primarily planting Typica and a small amount of Bourbon varieties on a mountain in Lincang, Yunnan. The choice of Typica was based on it being one of the oldest coffee varieties, possessing pure Arabica genes and being recognized as a specialty coffee variety due to its elegant and clean flavors.
Through fundamental changes in varieties, we hope everyone can experience Yunnan Arabica coffee beans with even better flavors and higher quality. Currently, these self-grown Yunnan Typica coffee beans are available at FrontStreet Coffee's flagship store and FrontStreet Coffee physical retail locations!
Flavor Characteristics of Yunnan Arabica Coffee
Compared to Typica, although Catimor contains Robusta genes, today's Yunnan Catimor no longer possesses the difficult-to-drink flavors of the past. Under proper cultivation and traditional processing methods, Yunnan Catimor small-grain coffee exhibits nut, caramel, and plum-like flavors.
Meanwhile, the inherent clean taste of Typica coffee beans, combined with FrontStreet Coffee's careful sun-drying process, reveals berry notes, brown sugar, nuts, and black tea-like characteristics.
