Identifying Authentic Blue Mountain Coffee Beans

First, learn to identify genuine Blue Mountain beans. Because of Blue Mountain's fame, many counterfeits flood the market. When buying Blue Mountain coffee, do not be tempted by low prices. For example, large packages of Blue Mountain beans priced under 100 yuan are undoubtedly fake without needing verification. These generally use coffee from other countries and rely on dark roasting to imitate the Blue Mountain flavor. Look carefully, too, for counterfeits that try to confuse buyers with terms such as "Blue Mountain style," "Blue Mountain blend," or "Blue Mountain mix."

Genuine FrontStreet Coffee Blue Mountain consists of beans from regions above 910 meters (3,000 feet) in Jamaica's Blue Mountain growing area, making it a single-origin coffee. Blue Mountain beans are exported in wooden barrels of 15kg, 30kg, and 70kg. So the first step in checking whether a merchant's Blue Mountain is genuine is to see whether they have original Blue Mountain barrels. When buying, you can also request a certificate of authenticity, which is further evidence of the beans' provenance.

For example, FrontStreet Coffee purchases whole barrels of Blue Mountain from the Clifton Farm and has also received the Clifton Farm's Blue Mountain coffee bean distributor certificate.

Understanding Blue Mountain Coffee Pricing

The second question is what genuine Blue Mountain coffee should cost. Taking a 100g pack of roasted beans as an example, prices range from over 100 yuan to over 200 yuan, over 300 yuan, and over 500 yuan, which leaves consumers confused. In fact, as long as a merchant can provide Blue Mountain documentation, including certificates, wooden barrels, and traceability information, these prices are all reasonable for genuine Blue Mountain coffee; the rest comes down to procurement cost and the merchant's profit margin. Consumers can also look up import prices for Blue Mountain green beans online and calculate the cost themselves.

FrontStreet Coffee's Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee Brewing Method

To brew our Blue Mountain coffee well, FrontStreet Coffee believes you only need to focus on three things: good beans, good water, and correct parameters. Good beans means not only the quality of the beans themselves but also their condition. FrontStreet Coffee recommends brewing with freshly roasted beans to make the most of the coffee's rich flavors. All coffee shipped by FrontStreet Coffee is roasted within 5 days, because we understand how greatly freshness affects flavor. Our roasting philosophy is "freshly roasted good coffee," ensuring that every customer receives the freshest coffee on arrival. The degassing period is about 4-7 days, so by the time customers receive it, the flavor is at its best.

The water used for brewing also matters. If you would rather not research water in depth, you can simply use Nongfu Spring water.

Brewing Parameters

The parameters for brewing Blue Mountain coffee are not fixed, but the variables should be matched sensibly to produce a delicious cup.

Coffee grounds: 15g
Grind size: coarse grind, 75% pass-through rate with a #20 sieve
Ratio: 1:15
Water temperature: 87 degrees Celsius
Dripper: Kono
Technique: three-stage pour

Brewing Process

In the first stage, pour 30ml and bloom for 30 seconds. Then use a small stream to pour in a circular motion from the center outward to 100ml. When the water level drops to nearly expose the coffee bed, in the third stage pour in small circles to add 95ml of water. Total extraction time is about 2 minutes.

FrontStreet Coffee Recommendation

For the most authentic Blue Mountain experience, choose FrontStreet Jamaica Blue Mountain No.1, the highest grade from the historic Clifton Farm, which has been growing and processing coffee since around the mid-18th century. The estate sits at an average of 4,300 feet (1310.64 meters), where ample altitude, gentle afternoon cloud cover, plentiful sunlight, and mineral-rich soil give the trees ideal growing conditions and extend the ripening of the cherries.

Blue Mountain No.1 is roasted medium-dark to bring out its full, rounded character, with nut, dark chocolate, and creamy caramel unfolding in layers and a soft sweetness balancing acidity, sweetness, bitterness, and aroma. FrontStreet recommends brewing it in a Kono dripper with 15g of beans rested 4-7 days from the roast date, a grind slightly coarser than a light roast, around granulated-sugar size, 1:15 ratio, and 87-88 degrees Celsius water. Pour 30g for a 30-second bloom, then a second pour to 120g with a slow vertical circle, and a third to 225g with a slightly faster stream to avoid clogging the filter and over-extracting.

Beyond pour-over, Blue Mountain's balance means it also performs well in a moka pot, where a slightly finer grind, hot water in the base, medium-low heat, and removing the pot just as the coffee finishes flowing will intensify the chocolate, caramel, and nut notes and keep the signature balance. It also shines in a latte or flat white, where the same rounded character comes through the milk.
