Although the American drip coffee machine is a fully automatic drip-style coffee maker, it can brew excellent coffee. A perfect, aromatic cup of coffee depends first on the quality of the coffee beans, as well as the brewing conditions: the mastery of grind particle size, water temperature, and time. Even with a fully automatic coffee machine, you can brew delicious coffee by making small changes to just one of these steps, making it both convenient and simple.
Preparation and Setup
- One American drip coffee machine (four-cup capacity) - Note: includes the main unit, built-in filter screen, and accompanying coffee pot.
- Drip filter paper, coffee spoon
- Grind particles: same as for pour-over method, Pegasus 2.5 grind size, with a texture similar to raw sugar when touched, with noticeable grain particles.
Basic Machine Description
Most American drip coffee machines come with a built-in filter screen that provides preliminary filtration. However, if you want purer coffee, you can add an additional filter paper directly on top of the filter screen.
Some coffee machines have water level scales that help determine the amount of water needed for different numbers of cups. If there's no scale, you can first use the scale markings on the coffee pot to measure the appropriate amount of water, then add it to the water reservoir.
The power switch is the key element for controlling the extraction time in American drip coffee!

Step-by-Step Instructions
Step One:
To make the coffee purer, add an additional filter paper on top of the filter screen. The method is the same as using filter paper for pour-over: fold the seams of the filter paper inward before placing it in the filter basket.
Step Two:
Place the filter screen and filter paper in the filter position, adjusting them to sit neatly and evenly. Put the ground coffee powder into the filter cup and level it by gently tapping.
Step Three:
Add the appropriate amount of water to the water reservoir. American coffee machines must use cold or warm water to extract coffee. Avoid using hot water, as it can easily cause over-extraction and damage the coffee's flavor.
Step Four:
When everything is properly prepared, turn on the power switch to start the coffee brewing process, but pay attention to the amount of coffee that drips out.
Don't let the coffee drip completely naturally. Always monitor when the dripping coffee reaches just under half of the default amount (for example, when brewing 2 cups, stop at 1.5 cups) and turn off the power.
Step Five:
Turn off the power but let the coffee continue dripping until completion. Turning off the power early prevents over-extraction of the later coffee portions, which would cause burnt, bitter flavors and loss of sweetness and aroma.
Step Six:
If you prefer a richer coffee taste, you can immediately remove the coffee pot and drink when you turn off the power. If you prefer a lighter taste, let the coffee continue to complete the dripping process (with the power already off). However, do not place the coffee back on a warming function, as the warming process will damage the coffee's flavor and quality.
