Introduction to Blue Mountain Coffee

Blue Mountain Coffee is a widely recognized coffee variety that grows exclusively in the Blue Mountain region of Jamaica, Central America. Only coffee grown at elevations above 1,800 meters in the Blue Mountain region can be authorized to use the "Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee" label. Therefore, it's important to note that very cheap products on the market labeled as "Blue Mountain Coffee" typically only possess "Blue Mountain coffee flavor." Blue Mountain Coffee is characterized by its mellow aroma, slightly sweet bitterness, smooth and palatable taste, with a hint of acidity, making it truly the finest among coffees.

Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee Plantation

Historical Development

In 1717, French King Louis XV ordered coffee cultivation in Jamaica. In the mid-1720s, Jamaica's Governor Sir Nicholas Lawes imported Arabica seeds from Martinique and began promoting cultivation in the St. Andrew area. To this day, St. Andrew remains one of Jamaica's three major Blue Mountain coffee producing regions, with the other two being Portland and St. Thomas.

Within 8 years, Jamaica exported over 375 tons of pure coffee.

In 1932, coffee production reached its peak, with harvests exceeding 15,000 tons.

In 1950, the Jamaican government established the Jamaica Coffee Industry Board, which sets quality standards for Jamaican coffee and oversees their implementation to ensure quality. The board grants special official seals to exported raw and roasted coffee from Jamaica, making it the world's highest-level national coffee institution.

Jamaica Coffee Industry Board Certification

Modern Production and Certification

Currently, there are six official symbols that represent authentic Blue Mountain Coffee origin: Mavis Bank Central Factory (MBCE), Mavis Bank Coffee (MHCCT), Portland Blue Mountain Coffee Cooperative (PXXSH), Coffee Industry Association (Wallenford), Coffee Industry Association (St. John's Peak), and JAS (Blue Mountain).

By 1969, the situation had improved as Japanese loans were used to enhance production quality, thereby securing market access. Today, this coffee has reached a status of passionate admiration.

By 1981, Jamaica had developed approximately 1,500 hectares of land for coffee cultivation, followed by investment in an additional 6,000 hectares of coffee-growing land. In fact, today's Blue Mountain region is a small area with only 6,000 hectares of cultivation, making it impossible for all coffees labeled "Blue Mountain" to actually be grown there.

Blue Mountain Coffee Barrel Packaging

Jamaica is also the last country to use wooden barrels for packaging and transporting coffee. Only after passing a series of stringent standards set by the Jamaica Coffee Industry Board (C.I.B) can coffee receive the government-issued certificate and be officially named "Blue Mountain."
