Small Hawaii is the world's fourth largest coffee bean producing region, with the most famous being Kona beans. This variety has low production, so its unit price is said to have an increasing trend.
Kona coffee beans grown in the Kona district of Hawaii's Big Island belong to coffee cultivated by Hawaiian volcanoes and are also the only coffee variety produced in the United States. They have a relatively strong taste, with acidity and rich aroma.
Coffee Bean Classification
Coffee beans are classified by shape into round beans (peaberry) and flat beans, which merchants humorously call male beans and female beans. Male beans are more elliptical with finer, less obvious central grooves, while female beans are flatter with more pronounced central grooves after roasting.
Kona's Unique Growing Environment
The unique natural environment of the KONA region has nurtured Arabica coffee, making it one of the world's highest-yield coffee plantations. Not only is the quality guaranteed, but coffee grown under its unique growing environment and climate has a richer flavor.
Coffee beans grown in the KONA region have a very beautiful appearance, with full, round shapes and bright luster, earning them the reputation as "the most beautiful coffee beans in the world."
Processing Methods
Hawaii primarily uses the washed method. The biggest difference from the natural method is using fermentation to remove the mucilage layer. After fermentation and mucilage removal, since fermentation bacteria and impurities remain on the coffee beans, they are washed again. To ensure thorough cleaning, this step consumes large amounts of fresh water, followed by drying and hulling the fruit.
Hawaii's clean, sweet mountain spring water provides ideal conditions for the washed method, which creates the bright, clear appearance and pure, fresh taste of Kona coffee beans. The washed coffee beans are then placed on large flat surfaces to dry naturally in sunlight.
Kona Coffee Cultural Festival
Every November, the Kona region of Hawaii's Big Island hosts the grand "Hawaii Kona Coffee Cultural Festival" to celebrate the harvest of Hawaii Kona coffee beans while commemorating the 180-year history and tradition of Hawaiian coffee. During the nearly 10-day event period, over 40 coffee cultural and competitive activities will be held across Hawaii's Big Island, Oahu, and other locations to popularize Kona coffee knowledge and give world visitors the opportunity to get close to Hawaii Kona coffee beans.
