2018 Panama Champion Estate Finca Auromar, Ironman Geisha Natural Process

Country: Panama

Region: Chiriquí Province (near Costa Rica's Piedra Candela mountain area)

Estate Name: Finca Auromar

Estate Owner: Roberto Brenes

Variety: Geisha

Processing Method: Natural Process

Altitude: 1650-1700 meters

Harvest Year: 2018

Cupping Notes: Floral notes, red pomegranate, Darjeeling tea, mango juice, grapes, smooth texture, persistent citrus and floral aftertaste!

In 2013, when Roberto appeared at the Best of Panama competition venue, not many people approached him, but he didn't look like a traditional coffee farmer. He seemed reserved but was actually talkative, and for some reason, we started chatting. The next day he came again, and during the break, he showed me a small batch of samples, saying they were Geisha varieties he had just harvested. I took them and smelled them, then we continued talking about the estate situation. He sparked my interest, so we arranged to visit his estate near the Costa Rican border after the competition. On the award night, he became the center of attention, bravely winning the championship in the Geisha category.

To get to Auromar Estate, you need to go from David City towards the volcano on the other side of Baru Volcano, along the highway toward the border. There are several well-known estates here, including Hartmann and Elita; Roberto's original purpose for purchasing Auromar Estate was for retirement, but later he discovered that neighboring coffee plantations had quite a reputation. Roberto, with his excellent business sense, was introduced through friends to the former manager of Elita Estate, and thus plunged headfirst into the world of growing Geisha. Auromar Estate covers over thirty hectares, including original forest. Although the tree density wasn't high, he still preserved most of it. Initially, he only tried planting coffee on a few hectares, facing the beautiful open land of the valley while still retaining the possibility of building vacation cabins. When I first visited, I stayed here for a short time and even walked up the steeper slopes at 1700 meters. The air was truly fresh and comfortable, the forest atmosphere was pleasant and soothing, and surprisingly, there were no artificial buildings around, only coffee trees and preserved woodland.

The Ironman batch comes from Roberto's love for triathlon sports. Therefore, he named his best Geisha batch: Ironman!

In 2013, his Ironman Geisha that won the Best of Panama championship set a sky-high price of about NT$11,600 per kilogram. Not just the price, but the outstanding quality successfully placed his coffee on the shopping lists of premium bean enthusiasts.
