Introduction

Ethiopia's administrative divisions are classified into four levels, arranged from large to small as Region, Zone, woreda, and kebele. Most green coffee producing area names follow this naming convention. This batch from Guji Zone is located southeast of the renowned Yirgacheffe region and administratively belongs to Oromia Region → Guji Zone, representing regional green coffee.

Similar to how Yirgacheffe became widely known after its rise to fame, Guji Zone has become an independent sub-region of the broader Sidamo area. Guji Zone has been increasingly favored by buyers within the Sidamo province in recent years.

Guji Zone has always been a region worthy of significant attention, and its development in recent years has confirmed that the rise of Guji Zone is indeed one of the important trends in Ethiopia's recent development. In addition to coffee lots from larger sub-regions such as Hambela and Shakiso, excellent lots from processing stations or even single estates have emerged, surpassing what the traditional Yirgacheffe region can offer. Furthermore, in terms of innovative processing methods, there are also honey-processed batches. Besides the recent focus on Gesha Village, coffee from Guji Zone has also become an important hotspot. To understand Ethiopia's trends, Guji can be said to be an essential focus.

Kercha Village is a tribal village within the Guji Zone. Farmers in this natural village primarily grow coffee and other small-scale crops for their livelihood. For sustenance, the Kercha Cooperative was formed by assembling small-scale coffee farmer families, which operates processing stations mainly serving local small-scale coffee farmer members.

Guji Zone has always been one of the popular sponsorship targets of the Dutch Operation Cherry Red program. This has benefited the region's production technology through information exchange and naturally improved product quality.

Operation Cherry Red is led by the Dutch company Trabocca, with half of the funding sponsored by the Dutch government. Since 2005, Trabocca has been collaborating with many small coffee cooperatives in Ethiopia, teaching and assisting to encourage small-scale coffee farmers to improve post-harvest processing techniques such as washed, natural, or fermentation processing, starting from harvesting red cherries, thereby enhancing coffee quality management. During each harvest season, Trabocca invites selected small-scale coffee farmer organizations and producers to participate in the program.

Micro-lot coffee (approximately 1,500 to 3,000 kg) is harvested, with careful manual selection of 100% ripe red coffee cherries (hence the name Operation Cherry Red). Trabocca provides financial, equipment, and technical resources to assist farmers, and commits to purchasing coffee produced according to standard operating procedures (SOP) that meets quality requirements at excellent prices. The spirit of this program is somewhat similar to a contract farming arrangement.
