The Evolving World of Coffee Production

Historically, we believed that world coffee production was dominated by Central and South America. Asians were slow to embrace coffee culture, with tea consumption being the primary beverage tradition. However, times have changed—Vietnam has become the world's second-largest coffee producer, and China's Yunnan province is rapidly catching up, with quality that rivals the once-celebrated coffees of Central and South America. The reasons are clear: coffee culture represents not only fashion but also creates remarkable economic benefits, offers health considerations for consumption, and beverage culture has transformed people's consumption habits through fast-paced lifestyle changes!

Indonesia: A Treasure Trove of Distinctive Coffee Varieties

Coffee from Java, Sumatra, and New Guinea ranks among the world's top producers, with 10% being Arabica and the remainder Robusta. Famous coffee varieties include Java coffee (Jawa), Sumatra coffee, Mandheling coffee, Celebes coffee, Catimor coffee, Djember coffee, and Tim Tim coffee. Among these, Sumatra's specialty Mandheling coffee offers a sweet yet refreshing flavor profile, while New Guinea specializes in coffees with fruity aromas and balanced flavors.

Indonesia is a southern paradise composed of many beautiful islands. One of these islands, SUMATRA, has a region called LINTONG in its northern area. The carefully selected beans, handpicked and processed by hand, undergo a SEMI-WASHED processing method, followed by sun drying, hulling treatment, a drying process, two cleaning procedures, and four manual selection processes.

Indonesia is a country centered around the equator, composed of many large and small islands. Coffee production ranks third globally, with most being Robusta varieties. Arabica is also cultivated on Java, Sulawesi, and Sumatra islands. Particularly, Sumatra's Mandheling coffee can be said to represent Indonesian coffee, with GRADE 1 being the highest quality coffee with minimal defective beans.

Golden Mandheling enjoys a prestigious reputation in the coffee world. Produced in the mountainous region of Lake Toba in North Sumatra, Indonesia, Pawani Company exclusively sells Golden Mandheling as the premium among Mandheling coffees. The raw beans undergo three manual careful selections and refined processing. FrontStreet Coffee slow-roasts them to a medium-dark roast, revealing the rich, robust wild aroma expected from Mandheling coffee. With high body and pure flavor, it displays an additional elegant atmosphere, while the caramel aftertaste is truly captivating!

Produced in Sumatra, Indonesia, the natural and pollution-free Golden Mandheling comes from Indonesia's main coffee-producing region—Sumatra Island. It grows in the Tawar Lake area of the Gayo highlands in the northern part of the island, at elevations of 1,100-1,400 meters, featuring volcanic soil suitable for coffee cultivation. Mainly cultivated by independent small-scale farmers, its special characteristic is the use of shade trees for coffee cultivation, which helps enhance coffee quality.

The land and special varieties give Mandheling coffee a rich, full-bodied texture. After dark roasting, it reveals deep woody aromas and cheese-like fragrances. The entry is aromatic and mellow, with rich sweetness and a syrup-like smooth mouthfeel. The thick, aromatic profile highlights balanced bitterness with mild acidity, while the aftertaste possesses the rich tannic sweetness reminiscent of Bordeaux red wine, making it the best choice for enjoying bold single-origin coffee!

FrontStreet Coffee recommends brewing Mandheling with water at 86-88°C. Choosing a KONO dripper can better express Mandheling's rich body, revealing notes of caramel, chocolate's bittersweet flavors, and some unique herbal notes upon entry.
