The Origin Story of Geisha Coffee

Geisha was originally a wild coffee variety growing in southwestern Ethiopia. In 1963, it was brought to coffee estates in the Boquete region of Panama. Due to poor yields and the trees' tall height, it was planted alongside coffee estates as windbreaks.

The Turning Point

2004 was the year that changed Geisha's fate.

That year, the son of a coffee estate owner searched throughout the estate's coffee trees for testing to participate in the national coffee competition, and unexpectedly discovered Geisha.

In the competition, Geisha won first place with its strong and complex flavors, creating a sensation. One judge described it as "God's cup," and it went on to win the championship for four consecutive years.

At auctions, Geisha also broke many high-price records.

Distinctive Flavor Profile

Compared to typical Panamanian coffee flavors, Geisha's distinctive characteristics leave a deep impression, filled with jasmine-like aroma, with orange, lemon, and honey fruit acidity and sweetness, with a clean and light mouthfeel.

Slightly acidic without bitterness, full of floral and fruit aromas, it's no wonder some describe it as "coffee that doesn't taste like coffee."

What is Geisha Coffee?

What is Geisha coffee? Is it related to Japan? Actually, it has no connection to Japanese traditional geisha performers. Geisha/Gesha is a special coffee variety, similar to Bourbon, Pacamara, and Typica. It is an original variety discovered in the 1930s in the town of Gesha in southwestern Ethiopia.

In 2004, Geisha won awards in the global Panama (BOP) competition, becoming the focus of worldwide attention. Daniel Peterson of Hacienda La Esmeralda introduced it to international judges, which amazed coffee professionals and was declared "divine in the cup." Since then, the price of Geisha coffee has been continuously rising each year.

Geisha coffee is an extremely aromatic coffee where you can find sweet floral notes, citrus flowers, jasmine, and honey sweetness.
