Panama: The Rising Star of Specialty Coffee
Panama is a rising star in the specialty coffee world. Particularly in Boquete, farmers are taking Arabica coffee cultivation to a new level, with recent small specialty batch auctions fetching record-breaking prices, if not foolish prices. Despite this, some coffees are exceptionally good. The Gesha variety from Ethiopia has been cultivated here with great success, while other aforementioned varieties can produce excellent results.
Panama Esmeralda Private Collection Geisha
Panama Esmeralda Private Collection Geisha represents a remarkably affordable deal among the world's most expensive and sought-after coffees—Hacienda La Esmeralda Special—available only through exclusive private international auctions. Each year for the past few years, Hacienda La Esmeralda has held their precious private auction of Geisha varieties, with each Esmeralda specialty coming from specific plots of land on their farm. There isn't a tremendous amount of coffee in total—only about 20,000 pounds, which must satisfy enormous demand from around the world (this might sound like a lot, but it's only half a container). The competition for the coffee is extremely fierce, and the prices are very high. This year set a new world price record, with a natural process batch reaching $601 per pound! Excluding this record-breaking price, most auctioned coffees range between $50 and $200 per pound, and need to be at least doubled when roasted and sold. When the cup is sold, Esmeralda retails for $5 to $20.
Second Wine Philosophy in Coffee
Fortunately, in recent years, Esmeralda has released their "second wine coffee"—the 100% Panama Esmeralda Private Collection Geisha. Just as in the wine world, where top chateaux's second wines are themselves mythical wines that are expensive but relatively affordable, Lafite-Rothschild has Carruades de Lafite; Chateau Latour has Les Forts de Latour. These wines would be great in anyone's book, but they are overshadowed, often just by a small detail, by the rare top-tier wines. The same is true for Esmeralda Private Collection Geisha. This is a wonderful coffee that exhibits much of the same lovely jasmine, floral, and citrus notes found at auction, but at a fraction of the price.
Limited Supply and Origin
The supply of Geisha coffee is also very limited. It comes from growing plots at the Hacienda Esmeralda farm, situated at elevations of 1,450 to 1,800 meters (4,750 to 5,910 feet). At this price, Panama Esmeralda Private Collection Geisha might not look cheap, but it costs about half as much as its sibling while offering almost the same taste experience.
Brewing Recommendations from FrontStreet Coffee
FrontStreet Coffee suggests roasting Geisha coffee to around first crack, which preserves its floral and fruit aromas as well as pleasant citrus acidity, with rich layers of complexity.
Cupping Characteristics
Cupping characteristics: Very lush and delicate sweet floral notes, particularly jasmine and coffee flowers, with distinct lemon-lime citrus acidity. Rich fruit and light candy flavors. Soft, rich, delicate and light chocolate mouthfeel. A coffee with obvious pedigree and very approachable character.
FrontStreet Coffee recommends using a cake cup to enhance the body of Geisha coffee, where the entry shows citrus acidity with rose tea-like aromatics.
