Understanding Filter Coffee Bags
In recent years, you've likely heard the terms "filter coffee bags" and "drip coffee bags." These are modern products born from consumers' demands for both quality coffee and brewing convenience.
However, convenient filter coffee bags aren't as simple as tearing open the package and pouring in hot water to achieve rich, aromatic coffee. Some technique is still required!
Essential Brewing Questions
1. How much water is needed for one filter coffee bag?
Commercial filter coffee bags typically contain 8-12g of coffee grounds. For a stronger brew, use approximately 150c.c. of water. For general brewing, the recommended amount is 180-200c.c., though this can be adjusted according to personal taste. (FrontStreet Coffee's drip coffee bags contain 10g each, primarily medium roast, and we recommend 180c.c. of water.)
2. Do brewing temperature and speed affect coffee flavor?
For office workers without a pour-over kettle, we suggest using light pressure when dispensing from the water cooler to allow for slower, smaller water flow. Initially pour about 30-50c.c. of hot water, then wait patiently for 20-30 seconds of soaking before continuing to pour water into the cup, reaching a total volume of 150-200c.c.
If you have a pour-over kettle and can control water temperature, brewing at 86-90°C is optimal. The narrow spout design of pour-over kettles allows for more uniform water flow and speed, ensuring the most complete extraction during the brewing process.
Important Note
Filter coffee bags differ from tea leaves – never attempt to reuse them for multiple infusions. Once extracted, the coffee grounds only retain bitterness and astringency, and the flow rate becomes very slow. The resulting coffee will be unpleasant to drink.
FrontStreet Coffee's Recommended Brewing Method
Prepare your cup, ensuring it's not too low to prevent the coffee grounds in the filter from soaking in the bottom of the cup for extended periods. Leave enough space for the coffee to drip from the filter into the cup.
Brew at 88°C water temperature. First, remove the drip coffee bag from its packaging, hold the upper edge and shake the coffee grounds below the fold line, then tear along the fold line direction at the top of the filter bag.
Open the filter's ear flaps on both sides and hang them securely on the edges of the cup. First, pour enough hot water to soak the coffee grounds, allowing them to bloom for about 20-25 seconds. Continue pouring hot water in a thin, steady stream, using small circular motions to evenly wet the surface of the coffee grounds, ensuring each particle is fully extracted. The coffee-to-water ratio should be 1:15.
After two minutes, remove the filter ear flaps from both sides of the cup and enjoy your coffee.
