New to Pour-Over Specialty Coffee?

What should you do if you have no concept of pour-over specialty coffee but still want to drink coffee?

Why not try drip bag coffee? It's convenient, quick, and simple.

But don't assume that drip bag coffee only requires pouring hot water into it. In reality, water temperature and coffee-to-water ratio are key factors. Don't overthink drip bag coffee as too simple—just continuously adding hot water until it flows out to become a cup of coffee. Hmm, the taste brewed this way can only be described as a sour and light herbal medicine.

Actually, the brewing method for drip bag coffee is quite simple. FrontStreet Coffee recommends the following brewing steps for drip bag coffee:

Brewing Steps

1. Tear open the sealing strip at the top of the filter bag.

2. Pull it open and hang it on the rim of your cup.

3. Brewing: First steep for 20-30 seconds, then add water in segments.

4. Remove and discard the filter bag.

Water Temperature and Water Amount

As for water temperature and amount?

FrontStreet Coffee recommends water temperature between 88-92°C, with a suggested water amount of 180-220cc. One bag contains 10 grams, which is equivalent to a 1:16-1:20 water ratio—much higher than the typical 1:13-15 ratio. The brewing method is actually very similar to pour-over.

First, use 20 grams of water to wet the coffee grounds and let it sit for 30 seconds.

Then add water in segments, filling to near the top. Wait for the water to flow through, then add more water again. Complete after about 3-4 water additions.

Because the grounds are fine and the mesh bag holes are small, the flow rate will be somewhat slower, especially during the second and third water additions when the tail-end water flow becomes very slow.

Fine grounds and fine mesh can achieve higher extraction, perhaps allowing for a higher water-to-coffee ratio.

After brewing, simply pinch the paper on both sides of the drip bag coffee to remove it without getting your fingers wet—very convenient.
