Ethiopian Sidamo: The Jewel of African Coffee

Ethiopian coffee enjoys an excellent reputation worldwide, with domestic coffee enthusiasts showing particular interest and passion for three famous producing regions: Harrar, Sidamo, and Yirgacheffe. The Sidama province is located in southern Ethiopia, bordered by Arsi province to the north, extending to connect with Bale province to the east, and adjacent to the Gamu Gofa provincial administrative region to the west. The Sidama provincial administrative region governs two extremely famous producing areas: Yirgacheffe and Kochere. Agriculture dominates the local industry, with coffee growing areas situated around the Great Rift Valley. The Sidamo producing region is located in southern Ethiopia, where agriculture is the main industry and coffee cultivation areas are situated around the Great Rift Valley. The largest town in Sidama province is Hawassa, an important coffee export and distribution center locally.

Ethiopia: The Birthplace of Coffee

Ethiopia is a country located in the Horn of Africa. As the world's most populous landlocked country with nearly 100 million residents, its land area covers 1.1 million square kilometers (Taiwan's main island area is 35,873 square kilometers). The capital and largest city is Addis Ababa, with two-thirds of the country's territory consisting of the Ethiopian Plateau at elevations of approximately 2,500-3,000 meters, earning it the title "Roof of Africa." Desert and semi-desert areas occupy 28% of the territory. Agricultural and pastoral populations account for eighty percent of the country's total population. Coffee is an important economic crop, with annual production of approximately 200,000 tons.

Sidamo: Premium Growing Conditions

Sidamo is a coffee producing region in southern Ethiopia, situated at elevations of 4,600-7,200 feet (1,400-2,194 meters), located at the southernmost part of the Ethiopian Plateau, bordering Kenya. Coffee from the renowned Ethiopian Sidamo region—Guji—undergoes both washed and natural processing methods using local traditional techniques. Most coffee growing areas in this region easily exceed 2,000 meters in elevation, producing coffee with exceptionally rich flavor profiles. Local farmers typically own only one to two hectares of land, cultivating coffee naturally without chemical fertilizers or pesticides, and carefully hand-pick fully ripe, bright red coffee cherries.

What is Operation Cherry Red?

Operation Cherry Red is a green coffee quality improvement program designed to help Ethiopian coffee farmers enhance cultivation techniques and improve harvesting and processing processes for better profits. This program was proposed by the Netherlands, an EU member country, and currently focuses on small-batch farms or cooperatives in three high-altitude producing regions: Yirgacheffe, Sidamo, and Limu. By constructing green coffee processing facilities, installing small-scale wet processing equipment, and building drying racks, the program aims to improve green coffee quality. Everything begins with picking red coffee cherries (ripe coffee fruits), hence the name "Operation Cherry Red." Beyond red cherry quality, Operation Cherry Red also uses cupping quality as its primary evaluation criterion. Only coffee that reaches a certain cupping score (88 points) can be sold under this program, allowing farmers to earn better profits while consumers enjoy a cup of higher-quality coffee.
