Brazilian Coffee Overview
Brazilian coffee comes in numerous varieties. Like other Arabica coffees, the vast majority of Brazilian coffee is not washed but sun-dried. They are classified according to their state of origin and shipping port. Brazil has 21 states, with 17 producing coffee. However, five states account for 98% of Brazil's total production: Paraná, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, and Bahia. Paraná in the south has the most impressive output, accounting for 50% of total production.
The characteristics of Brazilian coffee include low acidity, rich oiliness, full body, and suitability for medium and Italian roasting as blend coffee beans. Brazil is vividly described as the "giant" and "monarch" of the coffee world, as it is the world's largest coffee-producing country. There are approximately 39.7 billion coffee trees there. Small farmers now grow coffee accounting for 75% of Brazil's total production. The number of people engaged in coffee production in Brazil is two to three times that of Colombia, which is the world's third-largest coffee-producing country. Brazilian coffee is generally grown in relatively flat areas. To adapt to local conditions, Brazilian estate owners developed improved Arabica coffee trees decades ago that do not require high altitudes and shade, and can be planted on plains or grasslands, directly exposed to the hot sun, unlike traditional high-altitude shade cultivation methods.
Fazenda Rainha (Queen Farm)
Fazenda Rainha (Queen Farm) is located in the Alta Mogiana region of São Paulo state, north of São Paulo city. This estate is well-known in Brazil and is owned by the Carvalho Dias family. The family owns four major estates that have won awards every year since the first Brazil Cup of Excellence (COE) competition in 1999, winning more than 12 times in 7 years. In 2004, they even swept the championship, 9th place, 11th place, and so on. Many large and small estates in Brazil have hoped to win awards over the years, but it's difficult to achieve. However, the four estates under this family have won multiple awards year after year.
Fazenda Rainha boasts an impressive record: 2nd place in 2000, 3rd place in 2001, and 29th place in 2005. To date, Fazenda Rainha has won awards three times. Yellow Bourbon beans are inherently sweet and clean. Using the natural (or semi-natural) processing method reduces their acidity slightly, but combines well with sweetness, creating tropical fruit aromas.
The Carvalho Dias family is a founding member of the Brazilian Specialty Coffee Association, and their commitment to coffee quality and environmental protection is evident. On their family farms, they utilize natural waterfalls to develop pollution-free hydroelectric power, self-sufficiently meeting their electricity needs (another of their award-winning estates is named after this waterfall - Waterfall Estate). They have built churches, classrooms, nurseries, and medical stations, and insist on maintaining original forests with native flora and fauna as well as continuous reforestation. Taking Fazenda Rainha as an example, environmental protection is quite thorough. Due to the higher altitude and non-flat terrain, machines cannot be used for harvesting - all fruit is harvested entirely by hand. They grow low-yield, high-quality Bourbon varieties, representing the essence of premium Brazilian coffee! This batch of Fazenda Rainha belongs to the Carvalho Dias family, and the estate has been in operation for over 116 years. Located in the mountainous area of São Paulo state near the Minas border, at altitudes reaching 1,200 to 1,400 meters, with abundant annual rainfall of over 1,800mm but not enough to cause flooding disasters, and an average annual temperature of only 19°C. Therefore, the coffee fruit grows slightly slower, but has sufficient density. Although the yield is smaller, its aroma and flavor are unmatched by ordinary Brazilian highland beans. This estate mainly grows Bourbon varieties, even having Bourbon trees over 110 years old! In addition to growing Bourbon varieties, Fazenda Rainha's meticulous and careful processing methods are another key to its excellent quality!
