Kenyan French Mission Bourbon: A Unique Coffee Experience

For those who love intense fruity acidity, African sun-dried beans are an excellent choice, such as Kenya's French Mission Bourbon. Kenyan coffee offers a distinctive flavor profile with natural fruit acidity, rich blackberry notes, and strong wine-like aromas. The taste is bold and full of tropical character, yet accented with subtle hints of spices and chocolate, revealing delicacy beneath its passionate nature.

Kenyan coffee is graded into seven levels, with AA being the highest grade, grown at altitudes above 1,500 meters.

Exceptional Processing Methods

The excellent flavor of Kenyan coffee comes not only from its unique SL28/SL34 varieties but also from its superior traditional processing methods. Although Kenya is located in the equatorial region, most coffee is grown at altitudes above 1,700 meters, even reaching 2,100 meters. The extremely low average temperatures extend the initial washed fermentation process to as long as 72 hours (other countries typically need only 24-48 hours). This low-temperature, long-duration fermentation results in brighter, cleaner, and fuller flavors!

French Mission Bourbon: An Outstanding Alternative

However, another Kenyan variety, French Mission Bourbon, is equally impressive!

The French Mission Bourbon native variety (French Mission Varietal) from Chania Estate is named after the Chania River that flows through this region. The area receives over 76cm of annual rainfall, and the soil consists of deep red, fertile volcanic soil. Combined with ideal day-night temperature variations, it stands proudly alongside famous Kenyan AA coffees.

French Mission Bourbon represents the original Bourbon variety before improvement. In 1892, French missionaries brought Bourbon coffee to Kenya for cultivation. These native variety coffees were thus called French Mission Varietal. During cultivation, they avoided scientific improvements, preserving Bourbon's most original flavor characteristics.

The Harries family of Chania Estate has been growing coffee in the Thika region for over 100 years. They possess deep understanding of this area's unique red volcanic soil, combined with suitable coffee growing temperatures and rainfall. These excellent growing conditions create the distinctive flavor of Chania Estate's French Mission Bourbon.

Flavor Characteristics and Processing Innovation

Characteristics: Chania Estate's sun-dried processed French Mission Bourbon variety offers a rich and full texture. In addition to a thick chocolate aftertaste, it displays distinct sun-dried fruit flavors and coffee richness.

Everyone knows that Kenya is a major producer of washed beans, but sun-drying is a completely new attempt in Kenya. The overall traditional lemon fruit acidity is initially subdued by fermented wine aromas, only revealing itself later. The chocolate mellow notes remain, creating a silky-smooth mouthfeel.

Sun-drying is a relatively traditional processing method, though not commonly seen in Kenya. However, when this traditional processing method meets the French Mission Bourbon - an ancient coffee variety in Kenya - it becomes quite rare. FrontStreet Coffee's sun-dried Kenyan Hania is French Mission Bourbon, originating from Chania Estate, named after the river that flows through the plantation. The local soil consists of deep red, fertile volcanic soil. The Harries family has been growing coffee for nearly a century, and their rich cultivation experience, combined with local ideal terroir conditions for coffee production, has consistently yielded excellent flavor performance. In addition to sustainable coffee business operations, the estate owner also focuses on giving back to the local community, donating over 50 acres of land to Thika City Hall and Wabeni Technical Research Institution, dedicated to teaching practical livelihood skills to children from impoverished families and improving local living conditions.
