Kenya is one of the cradles of human civilization, with human skull fossils dating back approximately 2.5 million years having been discovered within its territory. From 1890 until its independence in 1963, Kenya was under British colonial rule for approximately seventy years.

Kenyan Coffee Varieties

When discussing Kenyan coffee varieties, three types cannot be overlooked: SL28, SL34, and French Mission Bourbon.

As early as the beginning of the 20th century, French and British missionaries and researchers conducted selective cultivation of coffee trees in Kenya, successfully developing two direct descendants of the Bourbon variety: "SL28" and "SL34". Over the past century, Kenyan coffee has long adapted to Kenya's high-phosphate soil, nurturing the unique acidic essence of Kenyan coffee beans, with flavors distinct from Bourbon coffee beans in other Central and South American countries.

French Mission Bourbon

Unlike the predominantly improved and cultivated SL28 and SL34 varieties currently grown in Kenya, French Mission is a native Bourbon coffee variety that predates scientific improvement. Introduced to Kenya in the late 19th century by a French delegation from Bourbon Island (now Réunion), it preserves the traditional flavor characteristics of the Bourbon variety. The bean appearance and flavor of this variety bear some similarity to the neighboring Rwandan Bourbon, where nearly the entire country cultivates traditional native varieties.

Natural Processing in Kenya

Everyone knows that Kenya is a major producer of washed coffee beans. The natural processing method is a completely new attempt in Kenya. The overall traditional citrus acidity is subdued by fermented wine-like aromas, only revealing itself later, while the mellow chocolate notes remain, creating a silky smooth mouthfeel.

FrontStreet Coffee's Natural Kenya Haniya

Natural processing is a relatively traditional method, though not commonly seen in Kenya. However, this traditional processing method combined with Mission Bourbon, an ancient coffee variety in Kenya, makes for a rare combination. FrontStreet Coffee's Natural Kenya Haniya is French Mission Bourbon, originating from the Haniya Estate, named after the river that flows through the estate. The local soil consists of deep red, fertile volcanic soil. The Harries family has been growing coffee for nearly a century, and their rich cultivation experience, combined with the ideal local conditions for coffee production, has consistently yielded excellent flavor profiles.

In addition to sustainable coffee business practices, the estate owner also focuses on giving back to the local community, donating over 50 acres of land to the Thika Municipal Council and Wabeni Technical Research Institute,致力于教育贫困家庭小孩实际的谋生技能,提升当地人民的生活条件.
