Costa Rican Coffee Heritage

Coffee trees were introduced to Costa Rica from Cuba in 1729, with only high-quality Arabica varieties being cultivated. In 1989, the country enacted laws prohibiting the cultivation of Robusta varieties. Costa Rica stands among the Central American nations with the most consistent quality.

The seven major producing regions are: Tarrazu, Tres Rios, Orosi, Central Valley, West Valley, Turrialba, and Brunca.

The Tarrazu region is located in volcanic areas reaching elevations of 2000 meters, featuring fertile volcanic ash soil and a cool high-altitude environment that produces coffee beans with rich flavors, bright quality acidity, and a pure, clean texture.

The coffee industry began to emerge in Costa Rica after 1700, making it the earliest coffee-growing country in Central America. The country's coffee history is relatively solid, and the government has shown increasing attention to the coffee industry since 1832.

The government enacted a decree stating: "Those who cultivate coffee shall own their land." Anyone who planted coffee on vacant land would gain ownership of that land.

In 1948, the Costa Rican government established a dedicated coffee department to primarily assist estates in improving cultivation, post-processing, and sales systems.

It can be said that in terms of both quality and quantity, Costa Rican coffee has consistently received global recognition and has been evaluated as world-class high-quality coffee.
