The Nord-Kivu province of Congo provides excellent conditions for coffee production, with abundant rainfall, high altitude, and fertile volcanic soil. The Mutendero Washing Station belongs to Virunga Coffee Company, which has deeply invested in the Nord-Kivu producing region. Over three years, they have brought in three agronomists to assist local farmers in improving cultivation, helped 2,300 coffee farmers obtain organic certification, and cultivated over 400,000 coffee seedlings to distribute to farmers to increase yield and improve quality in the region.

Through quality-focused operations, the washing stations owned by Virunga Coffee Company won the Congo championship in the 2014 AFCA (African Fine Coffees Association) Green Bean Competition, secured second place in 2017, and achieved three positions in the top five, demonstrating exceptional quality!

The Arabica coffee variety Bourbon is one of the closest varieties to the original species, discovered on Reunion Island (originally named Bourbon) next to Madagascar. Bourbon has its own distinctive characteristics, with high-quality flavor similar to Typica, featuring wine-like acidity and sweet aftertaste. Bourbon and Typica can be distinguished by the leaves of the coffee tree and bean appearance - Bourbon leaves are broader, the coffee cherries are smaller but more densely packed, making the beans relatively smaller and more rounded compared to Typica.

Washed Processing Method

After removing the skin and pulp, the beans are soaked and fermented in fermentation tanks to clear the mucilage remaining on the parchment, then washed with water and dried by sunlight or machines. This method produces the rich acidity that is one of the hallmarks of specialty coffee.
