Bolivia Yungas Caranavi Collasuyo Nicolas Colque Organic Washed

Council of Agriculture Organic Food Labeling Permit No. 106-1562-00002

Flavor Description:

Citrus, lime, tea-like notes, clean and balanced.

A typical Bolivian washed coffee with a finish featuring sweet chestnut and caramel aromas.

Our partner in Bolivia is Agricafe, established by Pedro Rodriguez and his son Pedro Pablo and daughter Daniela. Agricafe can be said to be a key driver in the revival of Bolivia's specialty coffee industry, and now remains almost the main pillar of Bolivia's specialty coffee industry. Several well-known roasters in Europe and America, such as Intelligentsia, Has Bean, Stumptown, Drop Coffee, 49th Parallel, Maruyama... etc., almost regularly purchase Agricafe's beans.

Pedro has created several important self-owned estates in the Caranavi region, such as Finca Don Carlos and Finca Alastias. Even more exciting is that in the eastern producing region of Bolivia, in the high-altitude area of Santa Cruz, he also created the Finca El Fuerte estate, which has already had harvests this year.

After we introduced Pedro's coffee last year, we were greatly impressed and specially made a trip, bringing back the secret weapon we eagerly anticipated. The several items that have arrived this time are absolutely worth savoring repeatedly.

El Sol de Mañana (Tomorrow's Sun) Program

In addition to his own estates, Pedro, with the dream of reviving Bolivian specialty coffee and taking care of the lives of coffee farmers, started the El Sol de Mañana (Tomorrow's Sun) program. This program invests significant effort in coaching member smallholders, providing technical support for important technologies such as breeding, pruning, fertilization, and harvesting. It purchases cherries harvested by member smallholders at higher prices and uses Agricafe's own processing plants for post-processing, allowing farmers' income and quality to enter a virtuous cycle of sustainable management.

Bolivia: A Diverse Coffee Origin

Bolivia is one of the five most diverse countries in the world. It is a landlocked country surrounded by five countries and deeply influenced by them, with a population of about 10 million. Indigenous Indians, who account for about 60% of the total population, are divided into 36 ethnic groups. Indo-European mixed (Mestizo) people account for 26%, with other European and ethnic groups also present.

The terrain ranges from the 6,462-meter-high Illmani peak to Lake Titicaca, the world's highest-altitude navigable alpine lake at 3,812 meters, as well as tropical rainforests! Such diverse terrain can be said to be a paradise for specialty coffee micro-batches.

However, Bolivia's coffee production has been declining year by year. From 1997 to 2014, exports fell annually to only 1/4 of their former volume. According to data from Roast Magazine, its coffee production ranks 38th, even behind the United States, which ranks 35th. Specialty micro-batch Bolivian coffee can be said to be extremely precious and rare to find.

The reason is Bolivia's backward economic development and infrastructure. Bolivia is currently still the poorest country in South America. Additionally, Bolivia was originally blessed with diverse terrain, but poor infrastructure has become a key factor affecting coffee processing, transportation, and quality.
